Item Abnormalities of early conceptus: a morphological study of 500 cases.(1979-06-01) Begum, H; Islam, K MAlthough MR and PT are post-conception family planning measures, a large number of women were found to be non-pregnant. In the absence of direct evidence, presence of necrosis in the placental tissue in 20.8% cases is regarded as suggestive of abnormal ova which might have ended in abortion.Item Acceptance of long-term contraceptive methods and its related factors among the eligible couples in a selected union.(2004-04-21) Nayer, I; Akter, S F U; Hossain, S; Luci, R HThis study focuses on the acceptance of long-term contraceptive methods and its related factors among the eligible couples in the rural area of Bangladesh. Among the respondents sixty were acceptors and one hundred seventy were non-acceptors of long-term contraceptive methods. Socio-demographic characteristics of the both acceptors and non-acceptors of long-term contraceptive methods were same except their age. Acceptors of long-term contraceptive method were older than the non-acceptors. Regarding the reproductive characteristics acceptors were married for longer time than non-acceptors. There was significant association between acceptance of long-term method and number of male children and desired additional children. Acceptors had more living male children and desired less additional children than non-acceptors. Regarding reasons for acceptance 35% accepted the method because the methods are long-term and safe while 30% accepted because the methods well suited them and 18% because accepted don't need to take daily like pills. Main cause for not accepting long-term methods fear of side-effects (22%) lack of proper knowledge about the methods (21%) followed by husbands objection (12%), desire for more children (10%) and health reasons (8%).Item Acetylating phenotype of sulphonamides.(1975-10-01) Anwar, N; Islam, N; Choudhury, A KItem Achievements of the National TB Control Programme.(1999-12-12) Hoque, M A; de Colombani, PItem Acquired pure red cell aplasia--a case report.(1998-12-30) Rahman, J; Rashid, M A; Yunus, A B; Chowdhury, S A; Kabir, A; Khan, M A; Wajed, JA married female patient of 36 years with chronic anaemia, because of pure erythroid aplasia with a haemolytic component and hypothyroidism due to antithyroid auto-antibodies, was subsequently discovered as a case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She was treated with corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy and her anaemia was corrected. The response of erythroid aplasia to corticosteroid and other immunosuppressive agents suggests that immunological factors play a role in erythroid aplasia in SLE. The occurrence of red cell aplasia in association with a variety of immune phenomenon supports the concept that in SLE, erythroid aplasia may be of immune aetiology.Item Action for health systems research in Bangladesh.(1997-04-01) Rashid, H A; Sivagnanasundram, CItem Adhesion of cholera phage to glass surfaces at high inactivation temperatures.(1976-06-01) Huq, F; Monsur, K A; Rahman, M ADecimal dilutions of cholera phage heated in test tubes at the temperature range of 65 degrees to 70 degrees showed an erratic behaviour in that the residual counts had no relationship to the quantity of phage originally present in the tubes. If the contents of the heated tubes were decanted off and the empty tubes washed repeatedly with broth, the recovery of phage from successive washings of the tubes was much higher than what would be expected on the basis of the simple dilution effect of washings. The data presented indicate that the heating causes loose adhesion of phage to the wall of the glass tubes from where they can be detached by washing or shaking. The facts that E. coli phage T1 and also cholera phages tested with two different broths have given similar results, suggest that some general property of the phage itself is responsible for the phenomenon observed. The phenomenon appears to be different from the adsorption of phage to glass filters at lower temperature range described by earlier workers.Item Administration of exogenous testosterone in the adult rat and its effects on reproductive organs, sex hormones and body-weight.(2000-08-18) Dewan, Z F; Morris, I D; Lendon, R GThe present experiment was performed to observe the effects produced by high dose of a testosterone ester on the reproductive organ and body weight changes in the adult rat, and to correlate these effects with the serum hormone changes. The present study has used the benzoate ester of testosterone (Testosterone benzoate, TB) in the adult male rat (300-350 g). The aim was to co-relate the reproductive organ and body-weight changes with changes in the serum hormone levels following the administration of the ester. TB was injected i.p. for five (5) consecutive days at a dose of 100 mg/kg body-weight. The control rats were injected with vehicle (arachis oil) at the same dose. The rats were killed on the 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th and 36th days. Controls for only the 6th and 36th days were kept. Reproductive organ weight, body-weight and testosterone (T) levels in serum and testis together with serum FSH and serum LH levels were observed. The testes weights remained similar (p < 0.05) to those in the control rats until the 18th days and were reduced on the 36th day. The epididymis weights were not changed until the 36th days, while the androgen-dependent seminal vesicle and ventral prostate weights were increased (< 0.05) compared to those in the control rats. The body-weights remained unchanged at the 6th day but were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased on the 36th day. The serum testosterone (ST) concentrations were highly raised on the 6th day, came at the control level on the 18th day and were significantly decreased (< 0.05) on the 36th day. The testicular testosterone (TT) content remained significantly lower (p < 0.05) from the 6th to the 36th days post-injection. The serum LH and FSH levels also remained significantly lower (p < 0.05) throughout the treatment period. It appears that the elevated serum T levels exerted dual effect in the adult rats, namely, enhanced growth of the androgen-dependent organs and an inhibition over the hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular axis. Inhibition of the said axis was evident by the lower levels of the serum LH and FSH; probably due to this, the TT-content remained all through lower, and perhaps this low TT-content for the long period had led to the low testis weights (p < 0.05) on the 36th day. This experiment therefore, demonstrates the effects of exogenous androgen administration in the adult male rat physiology.Item Aeromonas hydrophila: its isolation from acute diarrhoeal illness in rural Bangladesh.(1986-12-01) Aziz, K M; Rahim, Z; Faruqe, A S; Huq, S; Eusof, AItem Agranulocytosis--a case report.(2000-08-18) Rahman, J; Chowdhury, S A; Wajed, JDrug induced agranulocytosis is a rare condition. Yet one hundred and five drugs have been claimed to be associated with agranulocytosis and this list has since been updated. Some drugs are associated with relatively high risk. Dapsone is one of the drugs that was associated with a sufficiently high incidence of fatal agranulocytosis. It was withdrawn from use as prophylaxis against malaria. Here we present a case of a 27 years old female who had suffered from agranulocytosis after taking Dapsone, Amitriptyline and Oflacin for treatment of Dermatitis Herpetiformis.Item Ameloblastoma--a clinical study of 13 cases.(1991-06-01) Molla, M R; Shaheed, I; Shrestha, PAmeloblastoma is commonly encountered odontogenic tumour in Bangladesh. A clinical assessment of this tumour is presented in this paper with the particular attention to its age, and sex incidence, clinical presentation, and its management. Complete removal of the neoplasm is the treatment of choice regardless the method of accomplishment to obtain complete cure. Small lesion, particularly in young patients may by given chance to be managed by enucleation and curettage exposing the healthy surrounding tissue. However radical resection of the tumour is the most efficient treatment particularly in large tumours to avoid recurrence.Item Analysis of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) among arsenic victims: a cross-sectional study on health economics perspective.(2004-08-09) Molla, A A; Anwar, K S; Hamid, S A; Hoque, M E; Haq, A K M ZArsenic contamination of ground water is a major public health problem in Bangladesh. It is estimated that more than 20 million people are potentially exposed to arsenic poisoning. This cross-sectional study was carried out in Haziganj Upazila under Chandpur district between September to December, 2001 with the objectives to assess the socioeconomic consequences and disease burden in terms of Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs). A total of 168 subjects suffering from arsenicosis were studied. Both age and disability weights were considered to calculate DALYs. Agricultural labour and housewives suffered more from the disease. A strong relationship (p<0.005) was found between duration of suffering and occupation of the subjects. Also, there was a strong relationship between age of onset and education of the study subjects (p<0.006). No deaths directly from arsenicosis were reported. It may be noticed that 47% of the patients would be living with disability for more than 51 years. A strong relationship exists (p<0.002) between educational level and Years Lived with Disability (YLDs). A total of 7930 YLDs were lost due to arsenicosis, which accounts for 1908 DALYs.Item Analysis of psychiatric morbidity of outpatient children in Mitford Hospital, Dhaka.(1997-08-01) Rahim, D A; Ali, S M; Rabbani, M G; Rahman, M AThe objective of this study was to describe the pattern of psychiatric morbidity among 97 child patients who, for the first time attended the psychiatric outpatient department of Sir Salimullah Medical College & Mitford Hospital, Dhaka, in the year 1994. Dissociative disorder (Hysteria) comprised the largest group (21.65%), followed by epilepsy (19.59%). Majority of the cases were within 7-10 years age group with mean age 9.74 (+/- 2.39) years. Male outnumbered female patients and 53.61% cases came from rural background. The findings of the study indicate the need for establishment of child psychiatric treatment centres in different parts of the country including rural areas.Item Analysis of the epidemiological data of 600 psychiatric patients.(1978-06-01) Ahmed, S UAnalysis of a series of 600 psychiatric patients randomly selected from those attending a psychiatric clinic reveals that every single group of people shows its quota of psychiatric illness and all the major forms of illness are represented in a mixed society. From the present analysis it appears that Hindu patients are more careful for treatment than other religious groups and female patients were less frequently brought for treatment than their male counterpart. Patients coming from urban areas have many advantages over their rural counterpart in seeking scientific psychiatric treatment. Schizophrenia, affective disorders and anxiety neurosis were the three most common illnesses and these contributed to 77% of the total number of patients.Item An analytic study of surgical management of the temporomandibular joint ankylosis: an experience in Bangladesh.(1996-04-01) Molla, M R; Shrestha, K RThe clinical observations on 14 cases of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis including age and sex incidences as well as surgical management are presented in this paper. Ankylotic TMJ arthroplasty which include condylectomy with or without interpositional materials such as auricular cartilage and temporalis muscle flap to prevent reankylosis was used as the corrective measure. The accessory procedures like costochondral grafts and saggital split osteotomy to restore ramus height accompanied by camouflaging genioplasty in some of these cases were carried out. Besides, bilateral concomitant coronoidectomy were done in all cases. The patients were divided in three groups. In four cases only condylectomy was performed; the result was poor in three cases and moderate in one case. Condylectomy accompanied by interpositioning of auricular cartilage was done in another four patients; the result was poor in one case, moderate in one case and good in 2 cases. Six subjects were treated with condylectomy along with interpositioning of temporalis muscle flap; the result was good in 5 and moderate in 1 case. Condylectomy with temporalis muscle flap appeared to be the best method for TMJ ankylosis.Item Anatomical assessment of ventricular septum in relation to the aortic valve of bovine heart.(2008-04-12) Islam, Md NazrulItem Anatomical location and bony reaction in intracranial meningiomas.(2007-12-12) Hossain, A T M Mosharef; Abu Talha, KhItem Aneurysmal bone cyst of sphenoid bone--a case report.(2005-12-07) Karim, M E; Haque, M ZAneurysmal bone cysts of the skull are rare and involvement of sphenoid bone is even less frequent. We present X-ray, CT, MR imaging and histopathologic findings of an aneurismal bone cyst of the sphenoid in a 15-years old female adolescent. Radiological findings of the aneurysmal bone cyst of the skull were highly suggestive of the diagnosis and that were confirmed by histopathologic analysis.Item Antenatal fetal assessment using biophysical profile score.(1996-08-01) Begum, F; Buckshee, K; Pande, J NThis prospective cross sectional study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in Northern India. The objective of the study was to investigate the utility of recording certain fetal biophysical variables at or near term in high risk pregnancy for predicting the fetal outcome. A fetal biophysical profile score was used for predicting the outcome. The scoring system utilized following variables: non stress test, fetal breathing movement, fetal movement, fetal tone and amniotic fluid volume. One hundred and fifty four pregnant women attending a high risk pregnancy clinic were consecutively included in the study. At a cut off score < or = 4, sensitivity of the scoring system was 12.5% and specificity 99.23%. At score < or = 8, corresponding figures were 70.83% and 91.53%. As compared to each individual variable, the positive predictive value for abnormal perinatal outcome improved considerably after combining all the variables. The negative predictive value for normal perinatal outcome did not improve. Though biophysical profile scoring is used as a valuable adjunct in caring high risk fetuses, a simple and more practical screening test should be sought for. The cost-benefit analysis of such tests should also be performed.Item Antibiotic in general surgery: selection, timing and duration of administration.(1993-04-01) Zaman, M A; Ahmed, M KA continuous surveillance of hospital acquired infection (HAI) was done in the Department of Surgery, Dhaka Medical College Hospital during the period of 1st February '90 to 31st March '90. A new antibiogramme was prepared and applied in the same unit for chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis of surgical cases in the subsequent six months from April '90 to September '90. The result of this selection, timing of administration and the duration of antimicrobial use have been described in this report. The antibiotic policy adopted in this study has been found to improve the problem of infection in our surgical practice substantially. The incidence of HAI has been reduced to 0.5% from 3.9% which was seen in our previous study. The median post operative hospital stay has been reduced to 15.5 days from 18.5 days in case with HAI and to 8.5 days from 9 days without HAI. We conclude that a continuous surveillance of hospital acquired infection is necessary to develop an appropriate antibiogramme. The appropriate antibiotic should be started at the induction of anaesthesia and may be a part of the induction procedure.
