Case one was classical with multiple, soft, painful, tender, bleb- like, bluish nodules and gastro- intestinal tract bleeding. In case 2 typical zosteriform, soft bluish, compressible, tender, painful nodules simulating that of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome were present on the right thigh since the age of 14 years. He refused biopsy and therefore it was not possible to exclude other segmental vascular naevi.Item Polyneuritic leprosy presenting with bone changes prior to the onset of florid skin manifestation.(2001-01-01) Kuravi, A; Girish, K C; Ghatti, S; Stephen, T; Kumar, V AA case of polyneuritic leprosy is reported. There were minimal changes on skin, but changes in the bones were predominant. It is emphasized that polyneuritic leprosy is an entity. It is also stressed that neuritic leprosy can produce changes in deeper structures like bones, with minimal changes on skin.Item Diagnostic clinical features of atopic dermatitis.(2001-01-01) Sharma, LAtopic dermatitis is a common disease which varies widely in clinical presentation at different ages and places. Although authors working in western countries on white races have suggested many criteria, there is no uniform set which can be used in large population studies in this part of the world. Hence keeping in mind differences in environment and ethnicity of population, the present study was carried out. Seventy-three patients of atopic dermatitis and 71 age matched controls were studied. All the subjects were examined using a set of 34 potentially useful clinical features selected from different studies, including features for evaluation of photosensitivity. Multiple regression technique was used for analysing the data. It was found that 6 clinical features were diagnostic, 1. presence of itch, 2. history of flexural involvement, 3. history of dry skin, 4. family history of atopy, 5. personal history of diagnosed asthma and 6, visible flexural dermatitis. Photosensitivity was not a significant feature.Item Urticaria pigmentosa.(2001-01-01) Ritambhra,; Mohan, H; Tahlan, AA 2-year- old child with multiple brownish papules over trunk and limbs for one year having history of occasional blister formation is described. Histopathology revealed perivascular mast cell infiltration. Symptomatic treatment with topical corticosteroids and oral antihistaminics was effective.Item Chemical peeling--evaluation of glycolic acid in varying concentrations and time intervals.(2001-01-01) Gupta, R R; Mahajan, B B; Garg, GThirty-one patients with melasma, 4 with superficial post acne scarring and one each with xeroderma pigmentosum and epidermal naevus were studied to know the efficacy of glycolic acid for chemical peeling in varying concentrations and time intervals such as 35% (4 minutes), 52.5% (3 minutes), 70% (2 minutes) at varying intervals upto 6 months. These patients were in the age group of 17-44 years. These patients were followed up regularly. Results showed significant improvement when peeling was done with 52.5% glycolic acid for 3 minutes in melasma, 70% glycolic acid for 2 minutes in superficial post acne scarring.Item Tufted angioma in a case of neurofibromatosis type I.(2001-01-01) Yesudian, P D; Krishnan, S G; Jayaraman, M; Janaki, V R; Yesudian, PTufted angiomas are rare benign tumours with a characteristic histopathological appearance. Their occurrence in neurofibromatosis type 1, a genodermatosis in which vascular malformations are not uncommon, has hitherto not been reported. Some of the characteristic features of tufted angiomas are discussed.Item Tuberculosis verrucosa cutis complicating tropical elephantiasis.(2001-01-01) Kumar, M V; Kaviarasan, P K; Thappa, D M; Jaisankar, J JItem HIV/AIDS related knowledge, risk perception, attitude and sexual behavior of working women staying in hostels.(2001-01-01) Sharma, A K; Gupta, A; Aggarwal, O PHIV infection poses a formidable threat to women's health. Already, in India, women account for 21.3% of all AIDS cases. In metropolitan cities women living alone in hostels and having independent income, may have a liberal life style and chances of practising high risk sexual behaviour is greater. This study was conducted to assess the risks and risk perception of such women. Among eighty-nine hostel residents, AIDS awareness was 92.1%. Very few respondents had adequate knowledge about modes of transmission and methods of prevention. On, examination these lesions were tense, and some were haemorrhagic. Family history of similar lesions was absent.Item Primary cutaneous amyloidosis involving the external ears along with the classical sites.(2001-01-01) Khaitan, B K; Sood, A; Verma, K K; Ramam, M; Singh, M KA 26-year-old woman had multiple itchy persistent gradually progressive papular lesions on the forearms and shins for 10 and 4 years respectively. She also noticed similar lesions on both the ears for 4 years. There were no systemic symptoms. Cutaneous examination revealed multiple 2-3 mm discrete firm hyperpigmented papules on the extensors of forearms, shins and earlobes. Skin biopsy from all sites demonstrated deposits of amyloid in the papillary dermis. The patient was treated with cyclophosphamide 50 mg daily orally. There was more than 50% improvement in her lesions.Item Bacillary angiomatosis in an immune-competent patient.(2001-01-01) Gangopadhyay, A K; Sharma, P KBacillary angiomatosis is reported in a 65-year-old man. He was immunocompetent and the lesions subsided following treatment with oral erythromycin.Item Multiple apocrine hidrocystomas.(2001-03-01) Torsekar, R G; Vishalakshi, VAppendageal tumours localized to the head, face and neck region continue to fascinate and confuse the dermatologists. We report a case of multiple apocrine hidrocystomas on the face of a 35 year-old woman. Good cosmetic result was obtained with excision followed by cauterization.Item A study of dapsone syndrome at a rural teaching hospital in South India.(2001-03-01) Prasad, P VDapsone syndrome or sulphone syndrome was noticed within four to six weeks of starting treatment in 10 out of 604 patients (1.6%) on MDT for leprosy treated at Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital, South Arcot District, Tamil Nadu State during the period 1995-1998. Patients developed either maculo papular rash or exfoliation along with fever and lymphadenopathy. Abnormal liver function tests were noticed in 50%. The patients with dapsone syndrome were treated with corticosteriods after withdrawing dapsone. There was complete resolution of skin lesions and other symptoms.
