Abstract
(1) In histological preparations, beaded postganglionic axons were arranged in aplexus which apparently came into contact with all the smooth muscle cells of bladder. (2) The plexus formed a three dimensional meshwork and was composed of individual schwann cells enclosing cholinergic and/or adrenergic axons. (3) In electronmicroscopy, the beaded parts of axons contained more mitochondria, neurofilaments and various types of vesicles than the intervening parts. The organelles increased in quantity at the synaptic contact with the muscle cells. (4) At the point of contact with the muscle cells there was no schwann cytoplasm and the axon was separated from the muscle plasmalemma only by their fused basement membranes, thus confirming the observation of Richardson (1958, 1962, 1964) and others. (5) There were single endings innervating 2 adjacent muscle cells and single muscle cells innervated by 2 or more endings. (6) Morphological evidence suggested poflaxonal and polyneuronal innervation of individual smooth muscle cells.
