It is caused by an infection or toxins or autoimmunity or other causes. It is present in all age groups, but more frequent in children of the first years of life with predominance of boys. From data of autopsy, nonrheumatic carditis are found in 3-9% of children, who died from unknown causes. Its manifestations are age dependent.
