    Development and Standardization of Tests for the Measurement of Inhibition.

    Introduction: Inhibition plays a role in 'orchestrating' congnitive performance in various domains like perception, memory and motor processes. Measurement of inhibition is helful in various clinical conditions i.e. schizotypy, schizophrenia, OCD, attention deficits and hyperactivity disorders and patients with brain damage. Aim: of the present study was to develop and stadardize tests for the measurement of inhibition. Methodology: The sample consisted of 98 subjects, 50 males and 48 Females in the age range of 20 to 30 years. Clinical sample was included to validate the tests. Ten patients with tumour/infarct in the frontal lobe in the age group of 20-30 years were included in the study. Normal and clinical subjects were tested on stop-single and Go/No-go task. Results & Discussion: n results, males and females did not differ in their performance on both the tasks. In males, the effect of education was found to be significant in Go/No-go task. The stop-single and Go/No-go taskes were reliable and valid. The sensitivity of stop-singnal and Go/No-go tasks was 70% and 80% respectively. The specificity was 7% for both the tasks. The two measure of motor inhibition, i.e., stop-single and Go/No-go tasks were significantly correlated.

    Burden and Quality of Life in Spouses of Patients with Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder.

    Background: Several studies have explored the existence of burden primary caregivers and family members of schizophrenic patients. There were little convincing evidence to support the relationship between socio-demographic characteristics of the patients and family burden. Aim & Objective: The cross-sectional study was designed to investigate the effect of socio-demographic variables on spousal burden and quality of life of schizophrenic and dipolar patients. Methodolgy: 9 spouses of chronic schizophrenci patients were drawn from psychiatry OPD OF G.T.B Hospital, Delhi. Burden Assessment Schedule and WHOQOL-BREF was individually administered on each spouse. Results & Conclusions: The results indicated significant effects of gender and family type on spousal burden.

    Are Early Onset Alcoholics Different : A Cross Section Observational Study from a General Hospital Psychiatry Unit.

    Introduction: Alcohol dependence syndrome has been fraught with significant biopsychosocial problems. Early age of onset of initiation has been seen to complicate the issues further. Method: Clinico-psycho-social profile of all patient of alcohol dependence syndrome admitted to a general hospital psychiatric unit was assessed. Results: Ment age of onset was 25.42 years and that of first medical contact was 38.29 years. Age of onset had significant association with increased amount of alcohol consumption, early age of medical consulation, Presence of delirium, coexisting depression and deranged liver enzymes. Conclusion: Early onset of alcohol consumption had significant impact on course and outcome of the alcohol dependence syndrome. Effective strategies be formulated for early referral and targeted management.

    A Study of Psychiatric Symptomatalogy in Dengue Patients.

    Introducation : Dengue Fever is an acute febrile infectious caused by dengue virus which is transmitted through mosquito. A fraction of Dengue patients exhibit idengifiable psychiatric symptoms. Aims; The present studywas undertaken with an aim to identify the psychiatric symtoms associated with dengue fever. Material & Methods: The study was carried out in the department of psychiarty, University Collange of medical science (U.C.M.S ) And guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, a designated tertiary care center for Dengue cases in Delhi. The study period ranged from May 2012 to October 2012. The Study assessed the psychiatric symptomatology in dengue fever and its progression overt the course of dengue. Results During the acute phase, nearly all (90.3%) the patients exhibited thanatophobia. Over 80% of the subjects (most females ) had panic attacks and only less than 15% of these subject needed shor course of anxiolytics. During the recovery phase ( at the end of 1st week ), all the observed psychiatric symptoms decreased both in terms of frequency as well as severity.

    Anxiety and Depression among Psychiatry Outpatient in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Meerut.

    Background: Anxeity disorders are among the most prevalent mental disorders in the general population. Anxiety Disorders are associated with significant morbidity and often are chronic and resistant to treatment. Material & Methods: The study was conducted in a tertiary care hospital of Meerut. The patients attending the outpatient department of psychiatry were scdreened for anxeity (using Sinha's comprehensive Anxiety State ) and depression ( using Beck's Depressive inventory ). Results : Anxiety was commonest in 15-25 years of age group among males and female whereas depression was commonest in age group of 15-25 years in males and in age provide important clues to understanding the origin and maintenance of these syndromes and be of importance in treatment planning.

    A Comparative Study of Management of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder: Pharmacotherapy Combined with Congnitive Behavior Therapy versus Pharmacotherapy alone.

    Background : Obsessive compulsive disorder (OSD) is a disorder, debilitating in not just its chronic course, or prolonged and ussatisfactory treatment, but also in its clinical form. Serve socio-occupational impairment, poor health related quality of life, lack of understanding and support by the family and multiple co-morbidities complicate the scenario along with the slow and poor response to treatment, which emphasizes the need for developing more effectives ways of mannzinging these patients. Aim: To compare the effectiveness of Pharmacotherapy alone and when combined with Congnitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in patients of OCD. Methods: 100 consecutive, first contact patients of either sex and between ages 16-40 years with active symptoms of OCD visiting the psychiatric OPD in sir Ganga Ram Hospial were recruited for the study. These were randomized into groups by draw of lots, after obtaining their informed conset. The subjects were assessed using semi-structire [erfpr,a cpveromg spcop-demographic and clinical characteristics of patient and his illeness and by using the following tools icd 10 criteria for ocd yale brown obsessive compulsive scale (YBOCS). Result: The combined therapy group and pharmacotheerapy only group had mena YBOCS scores of 31.24(S.D =3.613) scored at the end of the study were 21.89 S.D 2.768 and 23.09 ( S.D =3.272) in combin ed therapy 9.34 and 7.48 in combined therapy group and pharmacotherapy and group respactivelyl the change was statisfied significat with p value being < 0.01 Conculaton: The study revealed the superiority of combined treatment modality over pharmacotherapy alone in patient of OCD.

    A Study of the Prevalence, Socio-Demographic and Clinical Correlates of Metabolic Syndrome (M S) in Drug-naive Patients of Anxiety and Depressive Disorders.

    Backgroud: The prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) and its components is reported to be higher in population with mental illness as compared to general population across al diagnostic categories. There is a paucity of studies on the baseline prevalence of MS and its these studes have produced mixed results. The present study was therefore carried out in patients attending the out-patient (OPD) psychiatry department. Aims and Objective:To find out and compare the prevalence and socio-demographic and clinical correlates of MS in drug native patients of anxiety and depressive disorders. Materials and Methods: Socio-demographic details, were collected and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools. Results and Conclusions: The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 23.5% while it was 46.2% in the depressive group and 9.5% in the anxiety group. 50% of the sample fulfilled at least one criterion for MS. While age, all MS components predicted MS overall; HDL, waist circumference and BMI predicted MS in depressive patient and HDL and triglyceride abnormalities predicted MS in the anxiety group.
