Item Multiple cold abscesses in a borderline lepromatous patient on multidrug therapy.(1989-10-01) Kulkarni, V; Gharpuray, M B; Kulkarni, D SA 25-year-old male patient was diagnosed as a case of borderline lepromatous (BL) type of leprosy in erythema nodosum leprosum type reaction. He was put on multidrug treatment. He took regular treatment. Approximately a year after the beginning of the treatment he developed multiple cold abscesses and later tuberculosis of the left hip joint. He was given antitubercular treatment with 4 drugs and the abscesses were treated surgically. He showed good response. This unusual case and the role of intermittent rifampicin is discussed.Item Peripheral nerve abscess in leprosy: report of twenty cases.(1997-04-01) Kumar, P; Saxena, R; Mohan, L; Thacker, A K; Mukhija, R DDuring the year 1994-1995, 20 of the 67 leprosy patients attending the dermatology department with any kind of nerve involvement were found to be having nerve abscess. These abscesses occurred in all types of leprosy (except the Indeterminate) and a variety of nerve trunks and cutaneous nerves. In none of the instances the abscess was associated with reaction. All the patients were surgically treated, without any steroid therapy. All cases showed significant improvement whenever there was nerve function deficit. Similarly, pain was relieved in all cases, when it was present.
