Item The nurse-patient relationship.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) KylItem Nutrition and cancer.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) Kaw NauCancer is a life threatening condition; it constitutes a major health problem. Cancer may become economic burden on family and country as well as the global burden. The connection between diet and the development of cancer has not been precisely defined or conclusively established. Preliminary data suggest dietary habits may increase a person's cancer risk particularly for breast, colorectal, endometrial, ovarian and prostate cancer. It is estimated that 30% of all cancers in men and 60% of cancers in women are diet related. There are currently about 10 million people with cancer and more than 10 percent of them died in 2000. Cancer is reported as a major global problem. It is estimated that there will be 15 millions new cases of cancer in 2020. High risks of cancer are stated as getting old and unhealthy life styles, such as smoking tobacco and eating fatty and high calorie diet (Nancy, S.2003). Cancer is one of the priority diseases of National Health Plan (1996-2001). The incidence of cancer is rising continuously at the rate; 1172 per 100,000 populations for the year 1994. In the last two decades, it was 80 per 100,000 populations. To cite obvious example, the overall yearly incidence rate for Yangon area in the years 1993 through 2001 was ranged from 73.1 to 89.0 per 100,000 populations (Soe Aung, 2002). Total financial burden of cancer affects to the individual patient, family and society. National Health Policy for Cancer Control Program has laid dawn in National Health Plan (NHP, 1996-2001) and aimed to reduce the incidence of cancer to 60 % within 10 years.Item Qualitative approaches to nursing research.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) Nang Voe PhanResearch is a systematic investigation of situations, events, objects or people and their characteristics or behaviours which may be conducted to validate old knowledge or generate new knowledge. Data were analyzed in terms of gender, age, education, frequency and duration of hospitalization. The results shown that male had more satisfaction than female, most patients over 60 years of age had goad satisfaction, those who attained primary level of education had more satisfaction on physical and interpersonal aspects while the patients with middle school had more satisfaction on psychosocial aspects. Mostly, patients with first time admission had good satisfaction especially those having 3-day hospitalization. Recommendation was made that necessary information should be given as much as possible on admission. Nurses should spend more time with patients during the initial phase of establishing trusting relationship to ensure that their feelings on their health problems expressed. Good communication skills and quality of nursing care play a role in order to obtain patients satisfaction.Item Academic writing: critical reviews.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) Khin NyoItem Perception and attitude of nurses towards their work and work condition(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) Nang Htawn HlaThis study examined the length of service (in years) the hospital nurses (n=90) worked to gain the next step of promotion, the perception and attitude of nurses towards their work and work condition. The study revealed that the length of service as for promotion from Trained Nurse to Staff Nurse ranged from 3 years to 27 years and from Staff Nurse to Sister ranged from 5 years to 18 years. On the other hand, 87 % among Sisters, while only 53.3 % among Staff Nurse had worked as Trained Nurse for more than 10 years to be promoted. This tells us that the chance for promotion is progressive. Majority of nurses 77.8% (70 nurses) felt satisfactory towards their job while 57.8% (52 nurses) felt frustrated about their job. Sisters and Staff Nurses were found to perceive their job more positive than Train Nurses. The reasons for feeling of achievement given by nurses were because of the value they had on their contributions for the betterment of patients and the recognition from patients towards their contributions. The reasons for being frustrated about their job were lack of resources, under staffing, lack of cooperation between co-workers, unclear job description, limited decision making and feeling of mistreat.Item The obstetric emergencies which: I never forget.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2006-12) Win, Kyu KyuItem A phenomenological study on male patients with lung cancer undergoing radiotherapy.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2007-06) Kyaw, Tin TinA Phenomenological study included five male patients with lung cancer undergoing radiotherapy in the Radiotherapy Department of Yangon General Hospital to describe and interpret their experiences through a series of face to face unstructured interviews, Sub-themes such as chest pain, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhoea, cough and itching are extracted under physical experiences. Most participants expressed their diminished sexual desire. Feeling of boredom, feeling of disclosure needs, feeling of role changes associated with client's perception on body image, fear of undergoing radiotherapy and guilty feeling of delay in seeking health care are common sub-themes under the psychosocial issues. Beliefs in supernatural healer, traditional medicine, and modern therapeutic care are found to be common sub-themes under spiritual issues. Moreover, coping styles of the participants vary and are not clearly identified. Based on this finding, information dissemination and support to the community who are at risk of lung cancer are needed to decrease late diagnosis and the complication associated with illness and radiotherapy. Thus, nurses' role such as health educator, counselor, researcher, care-giver, advocate, and good communicator are essential in Oncology Nursing Practice in community as well as in hospital settings.Item The evolution of nursing education in myanmar (1921-1991): a historical perspective.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2007-06) Hlaing, Htay HtayThis study used a qualitative historical approach to describe the evolution of Myanmar nursing education, covering the history from 1921 to 1991. The nursing education history of Myanmar before 1948 was described briefly while the period between 1948 and 1991 was given more emphasis. The researcher had interviews with seventeen retired nurse-educators and nurse-administrators who helped greatly in uncovering issue about the past situation of nursing education in Myanmar. Records of rules and regulations, orders, certificates, photographs, memos and books also revealed details of past events in nursing education history. Interviews were conducted in their own house and tape recorded. Analysis of the transcriptions involved the coding process, categorization and labeling, of themes. Ten themes emerged from verbatim notes. The findings indicated that no proper training was given during the Second World War and the standard of professional nursing education was very low until 1948. The state examinations were started in 1948, according to the rules of Burma Nurses and Midwives Council. Previous nursing education system was started with institutionalized hospital base Teaching by syllabus has been existed for a long times. Public health nursing had been introduced since 1954 but it was not attractive to nurses. In 1977 the curricula of various nursing education programs were reviewed and revised in line with National Health Plan. The first Nurses Training Centre was opened in 1986 and upgraded to the Institute of Nursing in 1991 when Bachelor of Nursing Science (B. N. Sc) degree program was established. Thus nursing education becomes highly academic after 1986. Discussion was done based on results and findings of data transcription it is assumed that this study would offer a connection and a chronological narrative of events of nursing education in Myanmar. Finally, the research provided information about past events of the nursing education in Myanmar. This research also pointed out the need for further study about nursing education system after 1991.Item Notes on writing a thesis.(University of Nursing, Yangon, 2007-06) Nyo, KhinA thesis is an act of demonstration and justification of your knowledge. This leads to uncover the silent psychosocial health needs of PWA and phenomenological orientation of caring practice for the PWA. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with (7) PWA who were admitted to a Specialist Hospital in Yangon, and analysed by using Burnard's qualitative data analysis method. The analysis revealed that the life of PWA was filled with such experiences as 'being depressed,' 'being ashamed,' 'being fearful,' 'being discriminated,' 'being abandoned,' 'devaluing of self,' 'being worried,' and 'desire to have a dignified and peaceful death.' The PWA perceived the hospital where they are taking treatment as a 'benefactor for them' and expected to be given ‘palliative care' from nurses. However, they were confronted with such experiences as 'being cared with impatient manner,' 'being cared with delayed responses' and 'being cared with reluctance to touch.' The practice of caring is still emphasizing on task or medical oriented nursing care.
