Testing 64 patient samples at 1:32 dilution, 31 were negative by both serum and eluate, 20 were positive by both, six were positive only by serum and one was positive only eluate. In six other cases eluate gave equivocal results while serum result was clearly positive. Some eluates negative at 1:32 dilution gave weak positive agglutination at 1:16 dilution.Item Bacteriology and Antibiotic Resistance Pattern in Community Acquired Urinary Tract Infection.(2013-07) Sharan, Rajiv; Kumar, Dhananjay; Mukherjee, BExtensive use of antibiotics have resulted in development of resistance among most commonly used drugs in community acquired urinary tract infection (UTI). This study was conducted to identify the resistance pattern in community acquired UTI .We collected urine for routine examination and culture from suprapubic urine in all the cases to avoid any contamination. E. Coli was the most common organism identified. Among oral antibiotics, there was high degree of resistance to penicillin group and cephalosporin groups. Among parentral antibiotics, all the cephalosporins were variably resistant except cephaperazonesalbactum.Item Baculovirus vector-mediated expression of heterologous genes in insect cells.(1994-12) Sridhar, P; Awasthi, A K; Azim, C A; Burma, S; Habib, S; Jain, A; Mukherjee, B; Ranjan, B; Hasnain, Seyed EThe baculovirus expression system employing Autagrapha californica nuclear polyhidrosis virus and Spodoptera frugiperda insect cells in culture has proved very popular for high level expression of heterologous genes: In this system, transcription of the foreign gene is usually driven by the hyperactive and temporally regulated polyhedrin gene promoter. Replacement of the polyhedrin gene, which encodes a 29-kDa occlusion protein (non-essential for viral replication), with a gene of interest leads to an occlusion negative phenotype which serves as a visual marker to select for recombinant viruses. Simultaneous expression of multiple genes can also be achieved. The heterologous proteins synthesized in this system are antigenically, immunologically and functionally identical in most respects to their native counterparts. This mini-review will aim at summarizing the potentials and utility of the baculovirus expression vector system and will address some important questions relating to the biology of this system.Item Blood sugar lowering potentiality of selected Cucurbitaceae plants of Indian origin.(1989-08-01) Chandrasekar, B; Mukherjee, B; Mukherjee, S KUsing five experimental models, the blood sugar lowering efficacy of eight plants of Cucurbitaceae family has been assessed. The ethanolic extract of Cucumis sativus Linn, Cucumis melo utilissimum Roxb, Cucumis melo Linn, Benincasa hispida Thunb Cogn and Tricosanthes anguina Nees, when administered in 250 mg/kg dose, orally to rats failed to lower blood sugar or to depress the peak value, after glucose load. However, ethanolic extract of Momordica charantia Linn plant and Coccinia indica Whit and Arn root significantly lowered blood sugar in fasted model and depressed the peak value in glucose loaded model. Ethanolic extract of Tricosanthes dioica Roxb plant caused a significant lowering of blood sugar in fasted rats and depressed the peak value in glucose loaded single and longterm fed groups of rats. The ethanolic extract of the aerial part of T. dioica also induced significant depression in the peak values in the glucose loaded models.Item Bombay 'O' group blood (Oh phenotype) in two subjects in a family at Calcutta.(1994-12-01) Chakraborty, S; Bhatia, V N; Mukherjee, B; Chartaborty, T K; Panda, S N; Ganguly, AItem Cavernous hemangioma of the conjunctiva(All India Ophthalmological Society, 2019-12) Mukherjee, B; Moosa, S; Rajagopal, RItem Changes in pancreatic beta cell function during growth and reproductive maturity of rats.(1989-06-01) Mukherjee, B; Chandrasekar, B; Mukherjee, S KAn attempt has been made to study the changes, if any, in the efficiency of pancreatic beta cell function at different ages using one experimental model. For this, pancreatic islets were isolated from albino rats of 3, 8, 12 and 36 weeks of age and challenged with various concentrations of glucose (11.0, 16.7 and 22.2 mM). Significantly higher rate of glucose stimulated (pro)insulin biosynthesis was seen in the islets from 3 week old rats as compared to the islets obtained from 8, 12 and 36 week rats. On the other hand, immunoreactive insulin release was observed to be highest from islets of 8 week old rats followed by that of 12, 36 and 3 week old ones.Item Chromoblastomycosis.(1975-06-16) Mukherjee, B; Sengupta, D; Bhattacharyya, K KItem Ciliochoroidal melanoma presenting as bleeding anterior staphyloma: Report of a case and review of literature(All India Ophthalmological Society, 2019-07) Alam, MS; Tongbram, A; Krishnakumar, S; Mukherjee, BItem Combined approach to management of periocular arteriovenous malformation by interventional radiology and surgical excision(All India Ophthalmological Society, 2018-01) Mukherjee, B; Vijay, V; Halbe, SPeriorbital arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are congenital lesions that may cause significant morbidity such as amblyopia, cosmetic disfigurement, or chronic pain. Due to the rarity of these lesions, they are frequently misdiagnosed and treated inappropriately. We managed a 6-year-old girl with preseptal AVM by endovascular embolization followed by complete surgical excision after 2 days. She was previously diagnosed as capillary hemangioma and was being treated with intralesional steroid injections and oral propranolol. Neuroimaging revealed an AVM fed by the branches of both external and internal carotid arteries and drained by the superior ophthalmic vein. Endovascular embolization with glue followed by complete surgical excision of the lesion was done. The resultant cosmetic and functional outcome was gratifying. Diagnosis and management of periorbital AVM remain a challenge requiring a multidisciplinary approach involving interventional radiologist and trained oculoplastic surgeons. Combined endovascular embolization followed by surgical excision proved safe and effective.Item Coverage evaluation surveys amongst children in some blocks of West Bengal.(1990-10-01) Mukherjee, B; Ray, S K; Kar, M; Mandal, A; Mitra, J; Biswas, RImmunisation coverage evaluation was carried out in 9 Blocks of West Bengal amongst 12-23 months old children. Fully immunised status of 5 blocks were under 16%. Poor measles vaccine coverage thought to be the reason. Other vaccine coverage was more than 60%, in most of the blocks excepting Hilly Balurghat and Tamluk. "Child ill-not brought" was the important reason for immunisation failure in most of the blocks.Item Effect of centpiperalone, a new hypoglycemic agent on insulin biosynthesis & release from isolated pancreatic islets of rat.(1982-03-01) Chatterjee, A K; Mukherjee, B; Mukherjee, S KItem An epidemiological investigation of Japanese encephalitis outbreak in Burdwan, District of west Bengal during 1987-1988.(1990-04-01) Mukhopadhyay, B B; Mukherjee, B; Bagchi, S B; Chakraborty, M; Mukherjee, K K; Mukherjee, M KItem Extrahepatic portal obstruction in children--experience with side-to-side lienorenal shunt without splenectomy.(1983-01-01) Mitra, S K; Mukherjee, B; Prasad, G R; Purohit, A K; Haque, J; Rao, K L; Kaushik, S; Koshy, A; Walia, B N; Pathak, I CItem Gastric volvulus.(1984-07-01) Narasimharao, K L; Mukherjee, B; Yadav, K; Katariya, S; Pathak, I CItem Haematuria.(1998-04-09) Mukherjee, BItem Health and safety in the community.
