Item Acanthamoeba keratitis : a case report.(2009-07) Gupta, Saroj; Aher, AtulAcanthamoeba Keratitis (AK) is a serious sight threatening infection of the cornea. We report here a case of Acanthamoeba keratitis in a young healthy male. He presented to us with a history of minor trauma in his left eye & immediately he washed his eye with stagnant dirty water. Diagnosis was based on observation of actively motile trophozoites and cyst in normal saline wet mount preparation of the corneal ulcer scraping. Patient was treated with available antiamoebic drugs (Topical Neosporin, Clotrimazol, Tab. Ketaconazal, Polymixin-B). Patient responded extremely well to medical line of treatment.Item Ageing & reaction time in indian population.(2012-01) Chandak, Prafulla R; Makwana, JayantThe effect of advancing age & gender on visual and auditory reaction time was evaluated in 320 normal Indian male & female volunteers in the age group of 21-60 years. The volunteers were divided in two groups according to age; Group A comprised of 200 volunteers (100 males & 100 females) in the age group of 21-45 years & Group B comprised of 120 volunteers (60 males & 60 females) in age group of 46 – 60 years. The auditory & visual reaction time was recorded using Techno Digital Response Time apparatus. Significant increase in visual reaction time and auditory reaction time was observed with the advancing age. In males, auditory reaction time increased by 22.6 msec & the visual reaction time for green & red light increased by 24.3 msec & 23.9 msec respectively from Group A to Group B. Similarly in females, the auditory reaction time lengthened by 24.4 msec while visual reaction time for green & red light increased by 28.6 msec & 27.1 msec respectively. The auditory reaction time was shorter in females in both the age groups, while visual reaction time was shorter in males in both the age groups. The results for change in auditory reaction time due to advancing age in males as well as females were significant (p<0.05). While the results for the effect of ageing on visual reaction time for red as well as the green light in males & females were significant(p <0.05).Item An alternative treatment approach for a supernumerary tooth fused to a Mandibular second molar: a case report.(2009-01) Tyagi, SanjeevSince abnormal tooth morphology can predispose to caries and periodontal disease, careful management of fused teeth is essential. This paper reports a rare case of a fused molar and supernumerary tooth and describes its management. Caries was removed from the tooth under local anesthesia. The pulp chamber of the supernumerary tooth was exposed and the root canal of the supernumerary tooth was prepared using the step back technique and copious irrigation with H2O2. Obturation using the lateral condensation technique with gutta-percha and AH26 sealer was subsequently performed and final restoration was accomplished with composite resin.Item Aluminium induced microscopic changes in the kidney.(2009-01) Jain, Shilpi; Khare, Satyam; Sharma, Archana; Budhiraja, Virendra; Rastogi, RakhiReports of aluminium toxicity on kidneys through dietary source is less reported even though it’s adverse effects such as encephalopathy, dementia, osteomalacia and fractures have been reported in renal failure cases after ingestion of aluminium gel. As Majority of Indian population is exposed to aluminium through dietary source, therefore, the effects of alumuinium toxiciy was studied in albino rats after oral administration of Aluminium salts. The present study was carried out on 40 albino rats divided into two equal group: control and experimental. Each of twenty animals of experimental group were given 37.5 mg of aluminium chloride per day orally for 3 weeks. All the animals were sacrificed on 22nd day. Small pieces of kidney were procured, fixed in 10% neutral buffered formaline and embedded in paraffin. Sections of 7µ thickness were cut and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin for general morphology and PAS for basement membrane. Significant histopathological changes were observed. Breakdown of general architectural pattern with degenerative changes were seen more in cortex as compared to medulla. Haemorrhage and inflammatory cell reaction was also observed in cortex.Item Analyzing the Role and Liability of Paramedics in the Indian Healthcare System(People’s University, Bhopal., 2022-06) Bajpai, A; Rajput, VS; Gupta, RR; Rai, A.The Nursing and staff serves as backbone of a healthcare system. Despite being central to any healthcare system, not much has been written about them, especially on the issue of their regulations and legal liabilities emanating from their professional activities. Though they are governed by National and State councils, the implications of their acts are different in Civil Law, Criminal Law and under their respective regulations. These differences are primarily the subject matter of this paper.Item Anatomical variations in formation and branching pattern of the femoral nerve in iliac fossa: A study in 64 human lumbar plexuses.(2011-07) Astik, Rajesh B; Dave, Urvi HFemoral nerve is used for nerve block in several surgeries and is vulnerable to compression in tight ilio-psoas compartment. The knowledge of origin and variations of femoral nerve in iliac fossa is important for anatomists, anesthetists and surgeons to prevent iatrogenic femoral nerve palsy. We dissected 32 human cadavers to study the anatomy of the femoral nerve. We dissected the lumbar plexus bilaterally; dissected the psoas major muscle to see formation of the femoral nerve. We measured the length of the femoral nerve from its formation to inguinal ligament; and recorded variations of the femoral nerve with digital photography. The average length of the femoral nerve was 144 mm. Anatomical variations of the femoral nerve were found in 25% lumbar plexuses. These variations included abnormally long L2 root, early division of the femoral nerve, origin of lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh from the femoral nerve, origin of nerve to pectineus from the femoral nerve in iliac fossa, splitting of the femoral nerve into two slips by psoas major or accessory slips of iliacus muscle. The aim of this study was to highlight variations in branching pattern of the femoral nerve in iliac fossa for appropriate exposure of the femoral nerve.Item Antibiogram of Group B Streptococci Isolated from the Vagina of Pregnant Women in Third Trimester of Pregnancy.(2012-07) Hajare, Vinay; Madhavi, L H; Singh, H K GGroup B streptococcal (GBS) prevalence varies from place to place; this organism is responsible for serious infections in newborns, such as septicemia and meningitis. The present study was aimed to find out the antibiogram of Group B Streptococci isolated from the vagina of pregnant women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy and to identify the risk factors for its colonization in vagina. The study was carried out in the Department of Microbiology, M. R. Medical College & Hospital, Gulbarga during a period from January 2007 to December 2007. Two hundred pregnant women who were in the third trimester of pregnancy and attending the antenatal clinics were included in the study. Two low vaginal swabs were taken from each women included in the study and were immediately transported to the laboratory for processing. Direct gram staining was done from one swab and the other swab was inoculated into sheep blood agar plate and incubated at 37ºC for 24-48 hours. Identification of organism was based on gram staining, colony morphology, catalase reaction, Christie Atkins Munch Petersen (CAMP) and Hippurate hydrolysis test. Of the 200 pregnant women screened, 7.5% were colonized by GBS. Incidence of GBS colonization was higher among pregnant women in the third trimester who were 25 years of age and primigravida. All the isolates were sensitive to Ampicillin, Erythromycin and Penicillin but were resistant to Gentamicin and Kanamycin.Item Antidiabetic activity of alcoholic extract of cinnamomum zeylanicum leaves in alloxon induced diabetic rats.(2008-07) Tailang, Mukul; Gupta, Bhaskar K.; Sharma, AmrishThe present study was carried out to investigate theantidiabetic potential of ethanolie extract of Cinnomomum zeylamicum leaves. Oral administration of ethanolic extract in the doses of 100,150 & 200 mg/kg body weight to white Wistar albino rats significantly reduced their blood sugar level in allxon induced diabetic rats under acute and sub acute studies.Item Aphthous Ulcer: A Case Report(People’s University, Bhopal., 2023-06) Tiwari, A.Mouth ulcers are quite common in all age groups. They can be linked to several conditions such as simple injury due to acute trauma or due to a sharp tooth or to an autoimmune disease. There are several medications available on the market to treat mouth ulcers. But do we need to prescribe a medication every time? This report presents a case of a 34-year-old male who presented with an ulcer in the palate and was treated without a prescriptionItem Arteriovenous Malformation in Crouzon Syndrome: A Case Report.(2013-07) Sharma, R K; Kapoor, ACrouzon syndrome, a hereditary syndrome of craniofacial dysostosis, is a triad of skull deformities, facial anomalies and exophthalmos . It accounts for approximately 4.8% of all cases of craniosynostosis with the prevalence of approximately 1 per 25,000 live births worldwide. This is a case of Crouzon syndrome with arteriovenous malformation over vertex which has not been reported so for in the literature.Item Assessment of Malaria by 5 Part Cell Counters CBC Analysis to Improve the Sensitivity and Specificity of Diagnosis(People’s University, Bhopal., 2022-06) Bansod, C; Akhtar, S; Gupta, RR.This study is undertaken to compare efficacy of peripheral smear (PS) and malarial antigen methods (contemporary methods of malaria diagnosis) and 5 part haematology cell counter scatterogram and flagging's in cases of malaria for effective treatment and reducing morbidity and mortality. The study was conducted by selecting 60 cases on strong clinical suspicion, first PS and antigen test was done followed by 5 part haematological cell counter for CBC. Results were subjected to statistical analysis. CBC has a sensitivity and specificity of 96.66% and 50%respectively while peripheral smear showed 96.15% sensitivity and 16.66% specificity for detection of malaria. Antigen has sensitivity of 98.24% and specificity of 93.6%. The study proved that various diagnostic modalities to diagnose malaria are far much better than only one diagnostic method.Item Bacteriology of infected deciduous root canal :a review.(2009-07) Rana, Vivek; Baba, Suheel Manzoor; Pandey, AnitaThe vast majority of diseases of the dental pulp & the periradicular tissues are associated with micro-organisms. A thorough understanding of these organisms & their relationship to clinical symptoms is necessary to formulate a sound approach to deciduous root canal therapy. This review article intends to highlight the microflora of infected deciduous root canal.Item Bicipital Ribs- A Report of Four Cases.(2013-07) Lokanayaki, VThe Thoracic outlet is bounded by the first thoracic vertebra posteriorly superior border of manubrium sternum anteriorly, and the first rib and costal cartilage laterally. Thoracic outlet syndrome is a common term for a number of disorders producing neurovascular compression over this area. In the collection of bones in the Institute of Anatomy, Madras Medical College. Bicipital ribs i.e., fused first and second ribs were found which is one of the important bony factor leading to thoracic outlet syndrome. The present report will be useful to clinicians while dealing with thoracic outlet syndrome.Item Bilateral chronic rupture of achilles tendon after cortico-steroid injection - a case report.(2009-01) Gupta, Rajesh; Pandya, V.K.Bilateral chronic rupture of Achilles tendon after cortico steroid injection is rare . Very few Cases of Achilles tendon rupture have been described in the literature after inra / peri tendinious corticosteroid injection . A middle aged man presented with gradually increasing difficulty in climbing stairs and mild pain, swelling in lower posterior part of both legs for two month after cortico steroid injection. We report a case of bilateral chronic rupture of Achilles tendon after cortico steroid injection .Item Bilateral taurodontism in deciduous molars: A case report.(2010-07) Tyagi, Parimala; Gupta, ShilpyTaurodontism is a rare dental anomaly in which the involved tooth has an enlarged and elongated body and pulp chamber with apical displacement of the pulpal floor. It has a very low incidence and very few cases are reported in literature in deciduous dentition. Endodontic treatment of a taurodont tooth is challenging and requires special handling because of the proximity and apical displacement of the roots. In this article a case of five year child with bilateral involvement of mandibular second molars is presented.Item Bilateral three headed biceps brachii: A case report.(2011-07) Vinnakota, Sunitha; Bhattam, NarasingaraoBilateral three-headed biceps brachii muscle was found in a sixty-year-old male cadaver. The supernumerary head took origin from the site of insertion of coracobrachialis and inserted into the common tendon of biceps brachii. Presence of this bilateral occurrence will be important for surgeons and traumatologists as this might cause compression of musculocutaneous nerve or median nerve.Item Bladder exstrophy.(2009-07) Apte, Ashwin V; Saran, RatatBladder exstrophy, more properly, the exstrophy-epispadias complex is a rare congenital anomaly occurring once every 10,000-50,000 live births with a 2.3:1 as male & female ratio. The diagnosis involves a spectrum of anomalies of the lower abdominal wall, bladder, anterior bony pelvis and external genitalia. It occurs due to failure of the abdominal wall to close during fetal development and results in protrusion of the posterior bladder wall through the lower abdominal wall. We report a case of bladder exstrophy managed by us.Item Bony and Cadaveric Study of Retromolar Region.(2013-07) Athavale, S A; Vijaywargia, M; Deopujari, R; Kotgirwar, SRetromolar area in the mandible has considerable surgical importance for dental surgeons. The anatomy of this area has not received much attention in standard texts of Anatomy. A variant foramen called retromolar foramen has been described in the literature. This foramen transmits a neurovascular bundle. Presence of this neurovascular bundle poses a risk in the surgical procedures carried out for impacted lower third molar tooth extraction. The dental surgeon should also be aware of occasional presence of this neurovascular bundle in retromolar area while infiltrating local anesthetic agents. The present study was conducted on 71 dry mandibles and 10 cadaveric specimens. In dry mandibles, the boundaries and dimensions of retromolar trigone were studied. Prevalence of retromolar foramen was recorded. The distance of retromolar foramen, if present was recorded from posterior border of socket for third molar and second molar teeth respectively. In cadavers, retromolar areas were dissected and structures related were observed.Item Brief intervention for smokeless tobacco users by dentist.(2010-07) Shanti, G; Bhambal, Ajay; Saxena, SudhanshuThe dental team has an important role to play in tobacco cessation and counselling. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the brief intervention for smokeless tobacco users as a longitudinal study. Ninty patients who were assessed to be in the Pre contemplation phase based on the Transtheoretical model, were included in the study. The nicotine dependence was graded according to Talwar et al (2004). Their follow up was done for 1 year. During the inception of the study all the participants showed heavy nicotine dependence. By the end of one year 10 males and 19 females became light nicotine dependent. Our study showed a reduction of 32% in the prevalence of tobacco use after the implementation of the programme using the “5 A” model.Item Cariogenic potential of most commonly prescribed liquid oral medicines for children.(2010-07) Agrawal, Nikita; Shashikiran, N D; Vanka, Amit; Thakur, Rupesh; Sandhu, S SConsumption of liquid oral medicine by frequently ill children, significantly increases the risk of tooth demineralization. In this study a survey was conducted wherein the pediatricians, pharmacist and medical representatives of Bhopal city were enquired about the most commonly prescribed liquid oral medicines for children. The four categories of medicines reported were: antipyretics/analgesics, antibiotics, antihistaminics/antitussives and multivitamins. Three samples from each category were taken. Sugar concentration was evaluated by Lane-Eynon general volumetric method and pH was measured by using digital pH meter (EU-TECH). High concentration of sugar was found in 50% of samples and 90% samples showed low pH. Sugar concentration was in a range of 20.6 to 68.2% and pH in a range of 3.8 to 8.5. As sugar in medication is a potential threat to teeth, therefore, alternatives including sugar substitute should be considered.
