Abstract
The effects of powder and extract from mulberry (Morus alba Linn.) leaves on the blood glucose levels, packed cell volume, blood cell count, and also volume and chemical properties of urine in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were compared. The experiments were conducted by daily and oral administration of the powder or extract from mulberry (Morus alba Linn.) leaves at a dosage of 250 mg/kg body weight to the diabetic rats for 8 weeks. The results showed that both the powder and extract from mulberry leaves could lower the blood glucose level in the diabetic rats (14.23±6.13 and 25.77±4.53 % respectively). Although no significant differences were found, the extract tended to lower the blood glucose level greater than the powder. In addition, the powder and extract from mulberry leaves had no effects on packed cell volume, blood cell count, and also volume and chemical properties of urine in the diabetic rats compared to controls. These findings indicated an antihyperglycemic activity of mulberry leaves and may be further developed to use as diet supplement.
