Surveillance of nosocomial infections (N.I.) in Srinagarind hospital was done from June 1987 to May 1988. Seven thousand three hundred and fifty-five discharged patients in 10 high risk wards were studied. Eight hundred and fourteen patients had N.I., and incidence rate of 11.06 per cent. There were 1,255 episodes of N.I., an infection rate of 17 per cent. Urinary tract infection was the commonest infection followed by lower respiratory infections. The infection rate was highest in the rehabilitation ward where patients were hospitalized longer than patients in other wards. The commonest pathogens isolated were P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella species and E. coli. Urinary tract infection was most common due to E. coli, while lower respiratory, bacteraemia, and both surgical wound, skin and soft tissue infections were due to P. aeruginosa, Klebsiella species and P. aeruginosa, respectively.en_US
