Abstract
With a large number of the DM and MCh Super specialty seats lying vacant after the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test–Super specialty (NEET-SS), the reason for such a decrease in seeking a super specialty degree needs a careful analysis. To streamline the quality of medical care in India we cannot afford to neglect super specialty training and loose some of them in days to come because of lack of student interest. The reasons were broadly medical treatment replacing the surgical interventions, doctors preferring independent practices instead of hospital dependent ones, super specialties that are physically less demanding and mentally less challenging, avoiding medicolegal or litigation prone high-risk specialties and selecting only those branches which are financially lucrative as well as have plenty of job opportunities with no state bond. The tendency is also to select a super specialty that is an ‘end’ branch with no further fellowship or training.
