Study Design: This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Minna the capital of Niger state, North central Nigeria. Sample sizes were determined at random from the food vendors selling ready to eat food. Place and Duration of Study: Samples were collected from the food vendors in Minna between June and December 2012. Methodology: Samples were assayed for intestinal parasites using direct wet mount and formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation techniques. Results: This study showed that 104 samples out of 116 (89.66%) were positive for intestinal parasites; 70 samples (67.31%) represented single infections and 34 (32.69%) mixed infections. Ascaris lumbricoides eggs were found in 11 (10.58%), Hookworm 10 (9.62%), Trichuris trichuira 4 (3.85%), Giardia duodenalis 15 (14.42%), Entamoeba histolytica 20 (19.23%), and Taenia saginata 10 (9.62%) respectively. A significant (p<0.05) prevalence was found in females 92 (88.46%) and in mean age of 31 – 40 years 34 (32.69%). Eggs and cysts of intestinal parasites were found more in the food samples such as Beans portage (15.50%), Stew (6.00%), Soup (15.50%), Rice (14.00%), Salad (20.00%), Spaghetti (12.50%) and Chinchin (20.00%) respectively. Conclusion: High prevalence of intestinal parasites in food vendors is a matter of great concern considering the effect which will lead to diseases outbreaks. The provision of food safety measures focusing on personal hygiene and periodical medical check-ups is highly advised.Item Association and treatment response to capecitabine-based chemoradiotherapy with CYP2C9 polymorphism in head and neck cancer.(2011-04) Paul, S; Pant, M C; Parmar, D; Verma, JAims : The aim of the present study is to investigate the association of polymorphism in cytochrome P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and response in patients receiving chemoradiotherapy. Materials and Methods : One hundred ten males suffering from locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and an equal number of healthy controls were genotyped for CYP2C9*2 and CYP2C9*3, leading to poor metabolizers (PMs) by PCR-based RFLP. Each case was assessed thoroughly for treatment response following WHO criteria. Results : The frequency of heterozygous genotypes of both CYP2C9*2 (27.3%) and CYP2C9*3 (20.1%) were found to be significantly higher in the HNSCC cases as compared to the healthy controls. Tobacco intake in the form of chewing or smoking and alcohol intake resulted in several fold increase in the risk to HNSCC in the cases carrying variant genotypes of CYP2C9*2 or CYP2C9*3. Further, majority of the cases assessed for response (134) carrying variant alleles of both CYP2C9*2 (65.3%) or CYP2C9*3 (70.58%) were found to respond poorly to the radio-chemotherapy. Conclusions : The data suggests a significant association of the CYP2C9 polymorphism with HNSCC and treatment outcome underlining the importance of pretherapeutic genotyping in determining the treatment schedule.Item A Comparative Study on Nutritional Status of Urban and Rural Early Adolescent School Girls of West Bengal, India.(2011-09) Maiti, S; Ali, K M; De, D; Bera, T K; Ghosh, D; Paul, SObjectives: Adolescents remain largely neglected and especially girl from a deprived section in our society. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the nutritional status of early adolescent school girl from rural and urban areas. The study was, therefore, carried out to determine and compare the nutritional status of adolescent girl attending urban and rural secondary schools in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India. Methods: Cross-sectional data based on anthropometric measurements (height, weight) was collected from 2545 girls aged 10 to 14 years attending Govt. approved schools in Kharagpur town and Dantan-II block. The nutritional status has been assessed with the help of some anthropometric indices. The weight and height were recorded for each girl, and converted to nutritional indices (weightfor- age, height-for-height, BMI-for-age Z-scores of the National Center for Health Statistics reference standrads). Results: The mean nutritional indices (underweight, stunting and thinness) were found to be much lower among the rural girl than urban girl. The overall prevalent rates of underweight, stunting and thinness were 27.9%, 32.5% and 20.2% respectively. In the rural area these were 35.4%, 35.7% and 26.3%, while in the urban they were 19.6%, 29.0% and 13.6% respectively. Conclusions: The present study shows that undernutrition constituted major health problems among early adolescent school girls in rural areas of India. Hence, the special emphases are needed to formulate various developmental and healthcare programmes for rural communities to prevent undernutrition.Item Diet, body fat & plasma lipids in breast cancer.(1985-05-01) Sarin, R; Tandon, R K; Paul, S; Gandhi, B M; Kapur, B M; Kapur, KItem Diffuse meningeal involvement in tubercular meningitis.(2001-06-12) Roy, J; Paul, S; Mitra, S; Gangopadhyay, P KItem Effect of fluoride dentifrices on salivary fluoride levels in children.(1993-07-01) Paul, S; Tandon, S; Murthy, KFluoride dentifrices are well accepted for their caries preventive effects. The fluoride concentration in the oral fluids after tooth brushing with fluoride dentifrices may have an important relationship to the caries reducing capacity. The present study was aimed to clinically evaluate the salivary fluoride retention of dentifrices containing low fluoride concentration in 50 children, aged 7-9 years before, during and after the use of fluoride toothpaste. Estimation of fluoride in saliva was done using a Orion microprocessor ion analyser with a fluoride specific ion electrode. The results of the present study suggest that there is considerable salivary fluoride retention after brushing with fluoride dentifrices. The retention of fluoride in the saliva at a higher level even with the low fluoride concentration, proves the similar cariostatic effect as of higher concentration.Item Eschar and IgM ELISA in the diagnosis of scrub typhus(Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists, 2019-03) Perumalla, SK; Paul, S; Abhilash, K P; Gunasekaran, K; Rose, W; Mahasampath, G; Jude, PJScrub typhus is one of the leading causes of acute febrile illness in India. This study aimed to determine the best diagnostic tool for the identification of scrub typhus and study the possible association between diagnostics and clinical characteristics. Patients with fever of ?15 days admitted to the hospital satisfying the case definition of 47 kDa quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) positivity OR scrub typhus IgM ELISA positivity along with the presence of eschar OR Scrub typhus IgM ELISA positivity along with defervescence of fever within 72 h of initiation of specific therapy were recruited. Of the 116 patients satisfying the case definition, 47 kDa qPCR was positive in 43 (37%) patients, whereas IgM ELISA was positive in 104 (90%) patients and eschar was seen in 59 (51%) patients. The median duration of fever was 7.5 days (interquartile range 6 days). Multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) was described in 44 (37.9%) patients. Two patients (1.8%) succumbed to the illness. Presence of eschar and IgM ELISA positivity were detected in 106 (91%) cases. Scrub typhus, even with MODS, has low mortality because of immediate institution of specific therapy due to physician awareness. The presence of eschar and IgM ELISA positivity can be used to detect a majority of cases of scrub typhus.Item Evaluation of cholestatic jaundice in young infants.(2001-08-25) Matthai, J; Paul, SItem Evaluation of Connective Tissue Changes in Different Histological Grades of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Histochemical Study(Kairali Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists, 2023-06) Jose, J; Heera R; Cherian, LM; Beena, VT; Paul, S; Arun, TJ.Introduction: In squamous cell carcinoma, cells invade the stroma in the form of islands, strands or sheets, which are surrounded by an extracellular matrix, thus producing reactive changes in the stroma. These reactive changes in the stroma may alter the biological behavior of oral cancer which convey some diagnostic and prognostic significance. Objective: This study was to compare staining intensity of various components of connective tissue such as collagen, elastin and glycoprotein among three histological grades of oral squamous cell carcinoma and normal oral mucosa. Materials and Methods: A total sample of 48 in which 36 cases of histologically diagnosed oral squamous cell carcinoma, 12 each of well, moderate and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas and 12 sections of normal mucosa as the control group were selected for the present study. The sections of tissue blocks were stained with connective tissue specific stains such as Verhoeff’s -VanGieson stain and PAS for collagen, elastin and glycoprotein respectively. Results: Staining intensity of collagen, elastin and glycoprotein around tumor island among different grades of OSCC and normal mucosa revealed statistically significant changes (P value <0.001). Collagen and glycoprotein degradation and elastosis are more prominent in poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinomas. Conclusion: Observable changes were seen in the stroma, in all the three grades of OSCC’s compared to normal mucosa. There was an increased stromal response in poorly differentiated carcinomas, when compared to the other grades. Role of the stroma is like a double-edged sword, at times helping in tumor invasion and otherwise warding off the tumor cells.Item Evaluation of Nutritional Status by Mid-Upper Arm Circumference Amongst Affluent Children.(2012-05) Maiti, S; De, D; Ali, K M; Ghosh, A; Ghosh, D; Paul, SIntroduction: Anthropometry is widely accepted as low-cost technique for defining the nutritional status of children. The mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is a fast screening method in detecting acute malnutrition and it is also a predictor of childhood mortality. Materials and Methods: This is the retrospective study to evaluate the nutritional status based on mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) among urban, pre-school age children. A total of 1060 children, aged 1 to 3 years, attending the vaccination clinic of the Indian Red Cross Society Paschim Medinipur Hospital over a two years period, were enrolled in the study. The measurement of MUAC (in centimetres) was taken by the standard technique. Undernutrition was defined based on age and sex-specific MUAC cut-off values as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Results: Boys were higher level of mean MUAC than girls at all ages and there was no significant sex differences. The age-combined rate of overall undernutrition was 18.96% and it was slightly higher among the boys (19.38%) than girls (18.46%). The age-combined moderate undernutrition was higher among the boys (16.08% vs 14.11%) but girls’ value was higher in case of severe undernutrition (3.28% vs 4.35%). Conclusion: The present study showed that a remarkable number of pre-schooler was undernourished based on MUAC.Item Evaluation of the common cockroach Periplaneta americana (L.) as carrier of medically important bacteria.(1992-12-01) Paul, S; Khan, A M; Baqui, M A; Muhibullah, MThe bacterial flora associated with external body parts, stomach and intestine of male and female Periplaneta americana inhabitating students' halls, teachers' residences and houses of low-paid employees in Jahangirnagar, University Campus were examined and analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The qualitative study in P. americana revealed the presence of 31 species of bacteria belonging to 16 genera. Most of these bacteria are pathogenic to man and domestic animals. The total viable bacterial counts (TVBC/g) in students' halls, teachers' residences and houses of low-paid employees were 1.27 x 10(8), 6.04 x 10(7) and 1.65 x 10(8) respectively in the male and 1.43 x 10(8), 5.83 x 10(7) and 1.63 x 10(8) respectively in the female cockroaches. The highest prevalence of bacterial flora both in number and types occurred in stomach followed by intestine and the external body parts.Item Experiences with a mother or mother figure in a neonatal special care unit.(1980-01-01) Narayanan, I; Mitter, A; Paul, S; Gujral, V VItem Failure of placental syncytiotrophoblast to provoke allogeneic recognition by lymphocytes in vitro.(1982-03-01) Paul, S; Jailkhani, B LItem Fenofibrate can increase serum creatinine levels in renal insufficiency.(2006-04-02) Paul, S; Mohan, VItem Giant cell tumour of the metacarpal bone.(1993-04-01) Paul, SItem HIV screening of foreign nationals--an important observation pertaining to unauthorised travellers.(1997-09-18) Neogi, D K; Paul, S; Bhattacharya, N; Chakrabarty, T; Mukherjee, K K
