Item Clinical Skill Performance among Medical Postgraduates, Naresuan University(Buddhachinaraj Medical Journal, 2009-12-22) Panjit Wannapira; Buddhachinaraj Phitsanulok Hospital; Wiroj WannapiraAccording to Thai Medical Council Competencies Criterion, medical graduates should be able to perform thirtybasic and seventeen essential complex clinical procedures consecutively. Postgraduate experience and confidencewere crucial for curriculum development, training needs and learning plan. This cross-sectional survey studywas done to study the confidence and experience in performing medical procedures among 176 medicalpostgraduates from Naresuan University who studied clinical years at Buddhachinaraj Hospital in 2004-2006,using self-administrative mailed questionnaire survey during January and March 2007. Ninety-eight questionnaireswere returned. Most of them worked in community and general hospitals. Of 30 basic and 17 essential complexclinical procedures, there was 26 and 9 procedures that more than 80% of the medical postgraduate hadconfidence respectively. Focused in experience which expressed by frequency of numbers of performance permonth (at least 50% of them performed\>5 times, 1-5 times and never done) were 4/18/5 and 0/11/4 in basic andessential complex clinical procedures respectively. Needs more procedural training during undergraduate yearsin internal medicine, OB\&GYN, and surgery were also suggested. In conclusions, although almost of medicalgraduates were rated themselves as high confidence, some was not. Experience in practicing clinical procedureswas not so high, even in basic procedures. Causes of nonconfidence and low practice rate should be furtherexplored.
