Item Anorexia nervosa.(1996-11-01) Pal, SItem Anthropometric Status between Tribal and Non Tribal School Children.(2014-01) Das, A K; Biswas, M K; Pal, S; Biswas, GA descriptive cross sectional study named "Anthropometric status between tribal and non tribal school children" was conducted on Guimara primary school, Matiranga, Kharagrachari and Thana primary school, Sitakund, Chittagong to assess the difference in nutritional status between tribal and non tribal school children aged 6 to 10 years in terms of selected indicators. The indicators were height for age Z score, weight for height Z score, and weight for age Z score. Data were collected by interview from mother of the child through semi-structured questionnaire and measuring height and weight of 128 children. Among them 63 were selected from tribal community and 65 from non tribal area. The study revealed that 9.2% non tribal and 7.9% tribal children were severely stunted, 12.3% non tribal and 1.6% tribal were moderately wasted and 9.2% non tribal and 1.6% tribal children were moderately underweight. In relation to sex among tribal children 12.9% tribal boys and 3.1% tribal girls were severely stunted, only 3.2% tribal boys were both moderately wasted and underweight. In case of non tribal children 17.9% boys and 2.7% girls were severely stunted, 17.9% boys and 8.1% girls were moderately wasted and 17.9% boys and 2.7% girls were moderately underweight. According to the age group of 6 to 7 years it was found that, only 4.2% non tribal children were severely stunted and 29.2% were moderately stunted where as 12% tribal children were moderately stunted. In both case of moderately wasting and underweight non tribal were 8.5% more than tribal children and among 8 to 10 years age group it was 12.2% and 7.3% more respectively and in case of severely stunted tribal children were 1% more than non tribal. Improper dietary practice was also found among the two group of study population. Information and health education should be provided to the parents of the children by community participation regarding proper use of sanitary latrine, provision of safe drinking water and proper dietary practice.Item Artesunate therapy in falciparum malaria--alone or in combination.(1999-05-25) Singh, S K; Mandal, A K; Pal, S; Sinha, S K; Singh, K K; Chaturvedi, R; Singh, S K; Agrawal, J KItem articleClinico-pathological study of 273 cases of rhinosporidiosis over a period of ten years in a tertiary care institute catering predominantly rural population of tribal origin.(2015-04) Sengupta, S; Pal, S; Biswas, B K; Jana, S; Biswas, S; Minz, R SIntroduction: Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous infection caused by Rhinosporidium seeberi, an organism whose taxonomy is still debated. The present study was aimed to document the clinico-pathological presentation of rhinosporidiosis in different parts in reference to caste, age and gender. Evaluation of diagnostic role of cytology in the diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis was also explored. Materials and Methods: All histology confirmed rhinosporidial cases were included in the study. Detailed clinical history and examination findings including previous hematological and cytological reports, if available, were collected and tabulated. Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) and Mucicarmine stains were used over cyto- and histological slides, if necessary. Observations: Male cases were more frequent in these series though this sex difference is less pronounced among tribal population. Majority of the cases belonged to 21-40 years age group. Nose and nasopharynx was the commonest site of infection and polypoid mass lesions were the commonest presentation. Both scrape and aspiration cytology could successfully detect rhinosporidiosis in 100% cases. Discussion: Most of the cases are among poor-socioeconomic status and probably out-door activities and pond bathing habit. Haematological data correlation did not revealed any significant association. Histology is the preferred method for confirmed diagnosis of rhinosporidiosis. Rare cases of misdiagnosis can be avoided by use of special stains. Conclusion: Rhinosporidiosis commonly presents as polypoidal lesions in nose and extra-nasal sites. Histopathology is the standard method for confirmation of diagnosis. Cytology can be used as an adjunct for pre-operative diagnosis of extra-nasal rhinosporidiosis. They mostly presented with respiratory symptoms and coagulation abnormalities with thrombosis and multi-organ failure. Hence, timely prediction of these cases with the early intervention might decrease mortality. Aims and Objectives: The objectives of this were to determine whether values of fibrinogen, fibrin degradation products (FDP), and D-dimer level correlates with disease severity in COVID-19 patients. Materials and Methods: This observational cross-sectional study was done on total 400 hospitalized COVID-19 adult patients where patients were categorized into moderate and severe cases as per guideline of Government of India. Patients with pre-existing coagulation disorder or receiving anticoagulant drugs were excluded from the study. FDP, fibrinogen, and D-dimer values of these two groups were evaluated and compared statistically to determine their significance. Results: Overall mean and standard deviation of fibrinogen, FDP, and D-dimer were 607.48 ± 177.73, 34.93 ± 29.2, and 6.23 ± 6.48 for severe category, while for moderate category disease, they were 389.77 ± 110.16, 10.79 ± 10.47, and 1.96 ± 3.3, respectively. Unpaired t-test showed that the study parameters are significantly higher in severe COVID-19 patients compared to moderate ones. Conclusion: It was concluded that elevated level of D-dimer, fibrinogen, and FDP is indicator of disease progression in COVID-19. He was investigated and MRI revealed a neoplastic lesion in the cervical cord at the level of C4, C5 with perilesional edema and tumour syrinx formation, suggestive of astrocytoma. Combination of papillary serous cystsdenocarcinoma and dysgerminoma was yet to be reported. A twenty years female patient presented with a large tumor of right ovary. Microscopically it was diagnosed as a collision tumor of ovary composed of dysgerminoma and serous cystadenocarcinoma. Mixed tumour can arise from divergent differentiation of a single type of stem cell. But components of collision tumor must arise from separate clones. Possibility of collision tumour should always kept in mind during assessment of difficult ovarian tumors to avoid diagnostic error. Key words: Collision tumor, dysgerminoma and serous cystadenocarcinoma.Item Comparative evaluation of somatic & excretory-secretory antigens of Entamoeba histolytica in serodiagnosis of human amoebiasis by ELISA.(1996-07-01) Pal, S; Sengupta, K; Manna, B; Sarkar, S; Bhattacharya, S; Das, PThe excretory-secretory antigens collected from the axenic culture medium and conventional somatic antigen prepared from the whole trophozoites of E. histolytica were compared for their efficacy in serodiagnosis of amoebiasis. A total of 280 sera collected from different clinically proven cases of amoebiasis and healthy subjects were analysed against both the antigens in ELISA. Both antigens showed a 100 per cent correlation in amoebic liver abscess cases, patients infected with enteropathogens other than amoeba and healthy subjects. However, excretory-secretory antigens showed slightly higher detection rate in patients suffering from acute amoebic dysentery and asymptomatic cyst passers groups. These results clearly suggested the use of excretory-secretory antigens by ELISA for serodiagnosis of amoebiasis due to its better or equal sensitivity, specificity and easier preparation compare to conventional antigen. The use of excretory-secretory antigen in serodiagnosis will not only help in performing more tests utilizing the same chemicals, but also save the cost, time and troubles for importing the foreign chemicals required for cultivation of E. histolytica.Item Cystathionine beta-synthase T833C/844ins68 polymorphism and stroke.(2006-12-23) Chandra, G; Pal, S; Gangopadhyay, P KItem Development of bioconcrete material using an enrichment culture of novel thermophilic anaerobic bacteria.(2006-04-25) Ghosh, P; Mandal, S; Pal, S; Bandyopadhyaya, G; Chattopadhyay, B DIn the biosphere, bacteria can function as geo-chemical agents, promoting the dispersion, fractionation and/or concentration of materials. Microbial mineral precipitation is resulted from metabolic activities of microorganisms. Based on this biomineralogy concept, an attempt has been made to develop bioconcrete material incorporating of an enrichment culture of thermophilic and anaerobic bacteria within cement-sand mortar/concrete. The results showed a significant increase in compressive strength of both cement-sand mortar and concrete due to the development of filler material within the pores of cement sand matrix. Maximum strength was observed at concentration 10(5)cell/ml of water used in mortar/concrete. Addition of Escherichia coil or media composition on mortar showed no such improvement in strength.Item Effect of chitosan on lipid levels when administered concurrently with atorvastatin--a placebo controlled study.(2005-08-21) Guha, S; Pal, S K; Chatterjee, N; Sarkar, G; Pal, S; Guha, Sharmila; Basu, A K; Banerjee, RIn a placebo controlled trialthe lipid lowering effects of chitosan, a unique dietary fibre, was assessed when given along with atorvastatin 10 mg in patients with chronic coronary heart disease. Altogether 100 patients were studied. They were randomly allocated in two groups of 50 patients each. Patients of group A received atorvastatin 10 mg before dinner plus 2 g/day chitosan in two divided doses. The groupB patients received atorvastatin 10 mg plus placebo. Patients were followed up for a period of 6 weeks. There was significant reduction in mean body weight in group A patients (3.14% versus 1,29% of body weight, p<0.05). There was also a significant rise in HDL cholesterol value (3.8% versus 1.07%, p=0.02) in group A patients. However, there was no significant reduction in the mean values of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and triglyceride in the two groups, although group A patients showed marginally lower values.Item Effect of some pesticides/weedicides on cathepsin B activity and lysosomal membrane.(1993-06-01) Mittal, S; Raghav, N; Pal, S; Kamboj, R C; Singh, HThe in vitro inhibitory effects of various weedicides and pesticides on goat brain cathepsin B and their labilizing potency on the lysosomal membrane were quantitated. Endosulfan an organochlorine insecticide inhibited the enzymic activity to approximately 50% at 7 mM concentration followed by methyl parathion, aldrin, melathion and benzene hexachloride (BHC) in that order. Among the weedicides, butachlor was found to be most inhibitory (approximately 50% activity was lost at 6 mM) followed by isoproturone (28%) and anilophos (19%). When the labilizing/stabilizing potency of all these drugs was observed on lysosomal membrane it was found that none of these was capable of stabilizing the membrane. At 40 degrees C and 1 mM drug concentration, aldrin, endosulfan, melathion and anilophos were found to be strong labilizers of the lysosomal membrane. Others like isoproturone, BHC and methyl parathion had moderate labilizing effect. Glutathione S-transferases, Esterases, NADH dehydrogenase, NADH oxidase and Glutathione reductase were assessed under the influence of Indole butyric acid (IBA) (400 ppm) in the nymphs (48-52h old) of mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi fed on radish plants treated for 13, 25 and 37h. The activity of Glutathione S-transferases, Esterases and NADH dehydrogenase increased compared to that found in the control of the same age group of nymphs and it was concluded that these enzymes might be involved in the metabolism of IBA. The other two enzymes, NADH oxidase and Glutathione reductase showed no significant increase in their activity compared to that in the control of the same age group. It was hypothesized that the latter enzymes do not play any significant role in the metabolism of IBA.
