Item Atypical petit mal epilepsy in twins.(1981-03-01) Shukla, R; Nag, D; Misra, U K; Malik, G KItem Basilar artery occlusion in cryptococcal meningitis.(1999-09-09) Goel, D; Kalita, J; Misra, U KItem Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in tubercular meningitis and their correlation with radiological findings.(2001-03-17) Kalita, J; Misra, U KThe present study has been undertaken to describe brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) changes in tubercular meningitis (TBM) and correlate these with CT scan and MRI findings. 24 patients with TBM were subjected to clinical evaluation and CT scan or MRI study. Outcome was defined by 3 month Barthel index score (BI) into poor (BI<12) and good (BI>or=12). The mean age of patients was 26.4+/-14.9 (range 10-62) years, 8 of them were females. Sixteen patients were in stage III, 5 in stage II and 3 in stage I meningitis. CT scan revealed hydrocephalus in 16, exudate in 9, infarction in 12 and tuberculoma in 3 patients. Brainstem was involved in 3 patients (2 infarction and 1 granuloma). BAEPs were unrecordable in one patient and abnormal in 15. The absolute latencies and inter peak latency (IPL) however were not significantly affected. The wave V/I amplitude ratio was abnormal on 12 sides. The BAEP abnormalities were not related to the stage of meningitis, level of consciousness, any specific CT or MRI changes or outcome at 3 months.Item Cervical canal stenosis: a clinico-radiological study.(1981-05-01) Shukla, R; Nag, D; Misra, U K; Kar, A MItem A clinical study of toxic gas poisoning in Bhopal, India.(1988-03-01) Misra, U K; Nag, D; Nath, P; Khan, W A; Gupta, B N; Ray, P KItem Clinical, radiological and neurophysiological spectrum of JEV encephalitis and other non-specific encephalitis during post-monsoon period in India.(2003-03-17) Misra, U K; Kalita, J; Goel, D; Mathur, AAIMS: To study the spectrum of encephalitis during the post-monsoon period in a tertiary care centre of India. METHODS: Clinical, neurophysiological and radiological features of patients with encephalitis are reported in this communication. The patients were subjected to clinical examination, CT or MRI scan, EEG, motor and somatosensory evoked potentials in both upper and lower limbs bilaterally and concentric needle electromyography. The laboratory studies for Japanese encephalitis (JE) comprised virus isolated, IgM capture ELISA, mercaptoethanol test and hemagglutination inhibition titre in paired sera against JE virus. Patients were classified into JEV encephalitis and non-specific encephalitis. On the basis of radiological features, they were classified into group I (thalamic or basal ganglia involvement), group II (brainstem involvement only) and group III (normal MRI). The outcome was defined into poor (bedridden), partial (dependent for daily activities) and complete (independent) recovery at the end of 3 months. RESULTS: Out of 26 patients (Age 7-70 years, mean 24.8 years), laboratory evidences of JEV infection was present in 14 patients and one patient had herpes simplex encephalitis. The patients with JEV encephalitis had more severe illness as evidenced by lower GCS score, higher frequency of anterior horn cell involvement, movement disorders and more extensive MRI changes. The EEG and MEP changes were also more frequently abnormal in the JEV group. On radiology, 15 patients had thalamic or basal ganglia involvement (group I), 3 isolated midbrain involvement (group II) and 8 had normal MRI (group III). Laboratory evidence consistent with JE were present in 11 out of 12 patients in group I and 3 out of 8 in group III, however, there was no laboratory evidence of JE virus infection in patients with isolated brainstem involvement. There was overlap in the neurologic and systemic manifestations in all the 3 radiological groups as well as in the groups with and without laboratory evidences of JEV infection. CONCLUSION: The observed overlap in neurological and systemic involvement in different subgroups of encephalitis may be due to JE or JE-like viral infection. The possibility of strain variation, change in virulence of organism or immunity of host needs further studies.Item Current status of osmotherapy in intracerebral hemorrhage.(2003-03-17) Kalita, J; Ranjan, P; Misra, U KItem Differential activity of protein kinase C in alveolar and peritoneal macrophages.(1996-04-01) Jaiswal, A S; Misra, U K; Bansal, S KThe characteristics of protein kinase C activity present in guinea pig alveolar and peritoneal macrophages have been compared and examined. The activity is predominantly cytosolic with preference for phosphatidyl serine as cofactor over other phospholipids. K(m) of protein kinase C for ATP is 30.30 and 54.05 microM in alveolar and peritoneal macrophages respectively. Scatchard plot analysis shows heterogenous binding sites for [3H]PDBu in alveolar macrophages in contrast to peritoneal macrophages showing homogeneous type of binding sites. PMA activates protein kinase C in a dose-dependent manner and shows downregulation at higher concentration in both alveolar and peritoneal macrophages. Endogenous proteins of molecular masses 77, 47, 37 and 16.5 kDa in alveolar macrophages and 77, 47, 38 and 15.5 kDa in pertioneal macrophages are phosphorylated by PKC. It also leads to decrease in polyphosphoinositide pool in brain and kidney. Therefore, changes in protein kinase C activity and its translocation were speculated and studied in brain, lung, heart, spleen, liver and kidney of rats maintained on three different diets, viz. casein (20% protein) deficient (4% protein, rice flour as protein source) and supplemented (deficient diet supplemented with L-lysine and DL-threonine), for 28 days. A significant alteration in total protein kinase C activity and/or its translocation was observed in these tissues in the deficient group in comparison to casein group. Supplementation of diet with L-lysine and DL-threonine could partially reverse the affect. These changes in protein kinase C activity and its translocation indicate alteration in the mechanism of signalling system in dietary protein deficiency and hence an altered response of tissues to the external stimuli in dietary protein deficiency.Item Effect of experimental tuberculosis on liver and serum lipids of chicken.(1980-04-01) Malhotra, H C; Misra, U K; Venkitasubramanian, T AItem Effect of gamma irradiation on fatty acid oxidation in rat liver slices.(1974-12-01) Ramanathan, R; Misra, U KItem Effect of methyl prednisolone on sensory motor functions in tuberculous meningitis.(2001-09-11) Kalita, J; Misra, U KA prospective hospital based study was undertaken to study the effect of methyl prednisolone therapy on sensory and motor functions in tuberculous meningitis (TBM). The patients with TB meningitis seen during 1994-1998 were studied. CT scan, motor evoked potential (MEP) to upper and lower limbs; and median and tibial somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were carried out in all the patients. Outcome was defined at the end of 3 months into poor, partial or complete recovery on the basis of Barthel index score. Inj methyl prednisolone (MPS) 500 mg IV was given to 21 patients followed by oral tapering dose of prednisolone over one month in addition to 4 drug anti-tubercular treatment. The control group comprised of 16 patients who received 4 drugs anti-tubercular therapy without any corticosteroid. These groups were comparable with respect to their age, stage of meningitis, Glasgow coma scale score and radiological findings. In MPS group, CMCT was abnormal in 9 and SEPs in 7 patients. In the control group, these were abnormal in 9 and 5 patients respectively. Three months after the therapy the frequency of improvement, deterioration and stationary evoked potential (EP) changes were also noted in both the groups. Diversity of evoked potential changes were also noted. Evoked potential changes were neither significantly different between the groups nor there was any beneficial effect shown in MPS group at 3 months. On the contrary, the control group fared significantly better than the MPS group. Initial MEP and SEP abnormalities were however related to 3 months outcome (p<0.01).Item Evidence for colchicine binding protein in Mycobacterium smegmatis.(1985-10-01) Misra, R; Srivastava, N; Misra, U KItem Hepatic mitochondrial membrane lipid environment and protein nutrition.(1991-02-01) Ahmad, S; Jaiswal, A S; Misra, U KEffect of feeding rice diet with and without lysine and threonine supplementation on hepatic mitochondria and its inner and outer membrane proteins, enzymes and phospholipids has been studied. The exchange of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine between microsomes and mitochondria has also been studied under these conditions. Deficient diet lead to significant decrease in proteins as well as activities of monoamine oxidase, succinate dehydrogenase, cytochrome a + a3 and cytochrome c in mitochondria and its inner and outer membranes. Feeding of the deficient diet also significantly reduced total phospholipids and PC in mitochondria and its outer mitochondrial membrane. In the inner mitochondrial membrane, only PE and cardiolipin were reduced. The incorporation (DPM/microgram PLP) of [methyl-3H]choline and [methyl-14C]methionine into PC of mitochondria and its outer membrane and that of 32Pi into PC and PE of outer mitochondrial membrane but only into PC of inner mitochondrial membrane were significantly reduced in the deficient group. The exchange rates of PC and PE between microsomes and mitochondria were reduced in the deficient group. Supplementation of the deficient diet with lysine and threonine profoundly improved the above biochemical lesions as compared to casein fed rats.Item Hepatic plasma membrane fluidity and dietary proteins.(1991-08-01) Kumar, V; Misra, U KEffect of protein deficient diet on hepatic plasma membrane fluidity has been studied in rats using (i) steady state fluorescence polarization and anisotropy, (ii) phospholipid and cholesterol contents, (iii) phospholipid fatty acid composition, (iv) turnover of phosphatidyl choline (PC), and (v) activities of membrane-bound enzymes as parameters and rats fed casein (20%) diet as standard group. A significant increase in steady state fluorescence and anisotropy values was registered in the deficient group, indicating increased resistance and hence decrease in fluidity of the plasma membrane. Supplementation of the diet with lysine and threonine improved these values, thereby suggesting the significance of diet for membrane fluidity. Simultaneous significant alterations in other parameters, viz. (i) decrease in PC, PE and free cholesterol and increase in esterified cholesterol contents, (ii) decrease in unsaturation of fatty acids of PC, (iii) decrease in incorporation of NaH2 32PO4, [CH3-14C]choline and [CH3-14C]methionine into plasma membrane PC, and (iv) decrease in activities of plasma membrane 5'-nucleotidase and phosphodiesterase along with increase of (Na(+)-K+)ATPase and adenyl cyclase, were observed in the deficient group which on supplementation with lysine and threonine showed improvement over alterations.Item Idiopathic hypertrophic cranial pachymeningitis: easy to suspect, difficult to prove.(2002-03-18) Misra, U K; Kalita, J
