Item Alpha-tocopheryl acetate hydrolase in chicken liver. Characterisation and properties.(1979-06) Kartha, V N R; Bai, N Jayanthi; George, Thomas; Krishnamurthy, SAn enzyme catalysing the hydrolysis of a-tocopheryl acetate was characterised in chicken liver. The enzyme was localised in the microsomes, had an optimum pH 8·6 and a Km value of 0·5 mM. The enzyme did not hydrolyse retinyl acetate, cholesteryl acetate and ethyl acetate, thus indicating a high degree of specificity. a-Tocopheryl acetate hydrolase required bile salts as a specific cofactor. The results suggested a role for this enzyme in the absorption of vitamin E.Item Ascorbate-dependent formation of hydroxyl radicals in the presence of iron chelates.(1993-10-01) Prabhu, H R; Krishnamurthy, SThe autoxidation of L-ascorbate on incubation in saline phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) is accompanied by hydroxyl radical (.OH) generation. The metal chelator EDTA showed significant inhibition of ascorbate autoxidation and ascorbate-dependent .OH release. On the other hand, Fe2+ (EDTA) greatly augmented both ascorbate autoxidation and ascorbate-dependent .OH production. The biological iron chelating compounds such as ATP, ADP, citrate and pyrophosphate suppressed both ascorbate autoxidation and ascorbate-mediated .OH production, thereby indicating that these compounds suppress the activating effect of iron. Ascorbate autoxidation and ascorbate-dependent .OH formation, stimulated by Fe2+ (EDTA) were significantly inhibited by .OH scavengers, namely mannitol, thiourea and sodium formate, as well as by catalase and to a lesser extent by bovine serum albumin, superoxide dismutase (native and heat denatured) and heat denatured catalase.Item Collision tumor with three components at esophagogastric junction.(1997-07-01) Pai, S A; Kher, N; Krishnamurthy, SWe report a 70-year-old man with a collision tumor consisting of three neoplasms at the gastroesophageal junction. The component tumors were squamous carcinoma at the esophageal and, adenocarcinoma at the gastric end, and leiomyoma within.Item The descriptive epidemiology and trends in incidence of nonocular malignant melanoma in Bombay and India.(1994-06-01) Krishnamurthy, S; Yeole, B; Joshi, S; Gujarathi, M; Jussawalla, D JNonocular malignant melanoma is a rare but lethal disease increasing in incidence and mortality in western countries with improved survival if diagnosed and treated early. This study reports its epidemiology from cancer registry data in six different parts of India; its anatomic distribution and trends in Bombay from 1964 to 1984. Age-adjusted incidence in Bombay patients shows no increase from 1964 to 1984 unlike in white caucasians. Males exceed females in patients 45 years or older unlike whites, but are equalled or exceeded by females in those less than 45 years. The sole of foot and internal mucous membranes are its major anatomic sites in Indians as in negroid blacks. This cancer in Indians resembles that in blacks and nonwhites in affecting less pigmented epithelia and skin. Susceptible melanosomes and ultraviolet light exposure may both be involved in its aetiopathogenesis.Item Edward’s syndrome with a novel karyotype.(2011) Patra, S; Garg, A; Gulati, A; Krishnamurthy, S; Aneja, SEdward’s syndrome was first described as a clinical entity in 1960 as a disorder of trisomy 18 (47 XX/XY; + 18) in babies with particular pattern of malformations. The Karyotype found in our case was (47 XX + 18 add (22) (p13) which has not been published so far in the literature. The less common findings noted in the baby were rocker bottom feet, syndactyly of 2nd and 3rd toes, microcephaly and corneal opacities. Though we didn’t find any significant association between phenotypic ranges with genotypic variation in literature, but further research is needed for it. We are reporting this case as the genotype is found to be novel.Item The effect of carbontetrachloride toxicity on erythrocyte hemolysis and on tissue catalysis of lipid peroxidation.(1980-01-01) Kartha, V N; Krishnamurthy, SItem Effect of retinol on the hemolysis and lipid peroxidation in vitamin Ε deficiency.(1984-09) Krishnamurthy, S; George, Thomas; Bai, N JayanthiA study on the effect of retinol in vitro on the hemolysis of vitamin Ε deficient rat red blood cells showed that retinol enhanced the lysis of the Ε deficient cells as compared to the lysis of normal cells. The lipid peroxidation present during hydrogen peroxide induced lysis of Ε deficient cells was however markedly inhibited in the presence of retinol without affecting the rate of lysis. In an actively peroxidising system of non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation of rat liver or brain homogenates and of brain lysosomes incubated with human erythrocytes, no lysis was obtained; incorporation of retinol in such systems resulted in lysis but no peroxidation. Hydrogen peroxide generating substances almost completely inhibited the lysis of normal human erythrocytes by retinol, but linoleic acid hydroperoxide and auto-oxidised liver or brain homogenates and ox-brain liposomes increased the lysis. It is concluded that vitamin Ε deficient erythrocyte hemolysis may be augmented by retinol, an anti-oxidant, having a lytic function without the peroxidation of stromal lipids.Item Effect of retinol, antioxidants & selenium on tissue catalysis of lipid peroxidation.(1979-08-01) Bai, N J; Krishnamurthy, SItem Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of prostate in an adult--a diagnostic dilemma.(2000-03-23) Dalal, D D; Tongaonkar, H B; Krishnamurthy, S; Kulkarni, J NEmbryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the prostate is a rare. Highly malignant tumour. The median age of occurrence is five years, but sporadic cases have been reported in adults' To the best of our knowledge, till date, fewer than ten cases have been reported of which only two are above the age of sixty years. We report a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of prostate in a patient more than sixty years of age. If one is not aware of this entity, one can make a mistake in the diagnosis as well as treatment.Item Factors affecting in vitro lipid peroxidation of rat brain homogenate.(1978-01-01) Kartha, V N; Krishnamurthy, SPeroxidation of the unsaturated lipid of tissue homogenates is an established method to assess the antioxidant or vitamin E status of animals. In the present study the spontaneous lipid peroxidation in air of rat brain homogenates is reported. The effects of various factors like pH, time, concentration of tissues, temperature, ferrocompounds and catalysis by added tissues like liver are described. Rat brain homogenates appear to be a suitable preparation for in vitro studies of lipid peroxidation.Item False negative and false positive cytology in gastric lesions.(1999-01-04) Ajit, D; Naik, P; Krishnamurthy, SItem Gastric carcinoids--a clinicopathologic study.(1998-07-08) Krishnamurthy, S; Sarkar, S; Palkar, V M; Dhir, V; Jagannath, P; D'Souza, L JAIM: Our objective was to document the clinical and pathological findings in eight patients with gastric carcinoids seen in our institution over a 16-year period (1980-96). METHODS: All cases reported during this period as microcarcinoids, atypical carcinoids and mixed carcinoid-carcinoma of the stomach were retrieved from pathology records. Eight cases with typical histologic features of carcinoid were studied. RESULTS: Seven cases were men (median age 53 years, range 35-55). Four patients presented with upper abdominal pain. Serum gastrin level was elevated in two cases. The endoscopic appearances and the endoscopic biopsy histology were not diagnostic. Surgical treatment ranged from simple nodule excision to partial, subtotal or extended gastrectomy and Whipple's pancreatico-duodenectomy. Lymph node and liver metastasis were seen in four patients each. The median duration of follow-up was one year. CONCLUSION: Gastric carcinoids have varied etiopathogenesis. These may arise in a background of hypergastrinemic conditions or may be sporadic. Most appear to be slow growing but aggressive neoplasms are capable of distant metastasis.Item Giant fibrovascular polyp of the esophagus.(1998-10-31) Dudhat, S B; Naresh, K N; Krishnamurthy, S; Shinde, S RItem Glycemic response and lipemic index of rice, raggi and tapioca as compared to wheat diet in human.(1993-03-01) Kurup, P G; Krishnamurthy, SCarbohydrate rich diet, rice, raggi or tapioca given to individuals of both sexes for 15 days did not alter the glycemic response (after oral glucose loading) as compared to an isocaloric wheat basal back ground diet. However, plasma cholesterol profile was reduced significantly by raggi and tapioca. Raggi reduced total serum cholesterol; low density lipoprotein cholesterol by 9% each, triglycerides by 15% and increased high density lipoprotein cholesterol, showing a significant beneficial effect on plasma cholesterol profile. Lipemic index as introduced in the present study was 121, 57 and 55 for rice, tapioca and raggi respectively when base line value of the isocaloric wheat supplemented back ground diet (control) was taken as 100.Item Hepatic sickling crisis mimicking recurrent cholangitis.(1999-04-13) Mehta, S; Nagral, A; Sucheta, V K; Nagral, S; Gopal, S; Joshi, A S; Krishnamurthy, SA 22-year-old man with homozygous sickle cell disease presented with recurrent fever, right upper quadrant pain and jaundice. Liver biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of hepatic sickling crisis; the symptoms responded to hydroxyurea therapy. Hepatic vasocclusive crisis can diagnosed on liver biopsy, and need not be a diagnosis of exclusion.Item Hydroxy radial involvement in retinol hemolysis of human erythrocytes in vitro.(1984-12-01) Krishnamurthy, S; George, T; Bai, N JItem Keratoprosthesis: Current global scenario and a broad Indian perspective(All India Ophthalmological Society, 2018-05) Iyer, G; Srinivasan, B; Agarwal, S; Talele, D; Rishi, E; Rishi, P; Krishnamurthy, S; Vijaya, L; Subramanian, N; Somasundaram, SKeratoprosthesis (Kpro) forms the last resort for bilateral end-stage corneal blindness. The Boston Type 1 and 2 Kpros, the modified osteo-odonto Kpro and the osteo-Kpro are the more frequently and commonly performed Kpros, and this review attempts to compile the current data available on these Kpros worldwide from large single-center studies and compare the indications and outcomes with Kpros in the Indian scenario. Although the indications have significantly expanded over the years and the complications have reduced with modifications in design and postoperative regimen, these are procedures that require an exclusive setup, and a commitment toward long-term follow-up and post-Kpro care. The last decade has seen a surge in the number of Kpro procedures performed worldwide as well as in India. There is a growing need in our country among ophthalmologists to be aware of the indications for Kpro to facilitate appropriate referral as well as of the procedure to enable basic evaluation during follow-ups in case the need arises, and among corneal specialists interested to pursue the field of Kpros in understanding the nuances of these surgeries and to make a judicious decision regarding patient and Kpro selection and more importantly deferral.Item Linoleic acid hemolysis of erythrocytes.(1980-04-01) Bai, N J; George, T; Krishnamurthy, SItem Lipid antioxidants & hemolysis.(1980-10-01) George, T; Kumar, P S; Jayanthi Bai, N; Krishnamurthy, SItem Maternal tobacco use and adverse reproductive outcome.(1997-01-01) Krishnamurthy, S
