Item Absence of inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery compensated by dorsal pancreatic artery: a case report.(2006-04-08) Deepthinath, R; Nayak, S; Vollala, V R; Bhat, S; Rao, M; Samuel, V PConsideration of new aspects of vascular anatomy of the pancreaticoduodenal region is required for further improvement of surgical procedures. Awareness of variations in arteries supplying the duodenum and pancreas can help in minimizing the blood loss during surgery. We report the absence of inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery, which was compensated by a large dorsal pancreatic artery arising from proximal part of the splenic artery. This artery replaced inferior pancreaticoduodenal artery and formed a large loop of anastomosis with the gastroduodenal artery.Item Acanthameba keratitis.(1999-07-22) Valiathan, M; Bhat, S; Rao, G; Rao, R VItem Autopsies in newborns: a study of 356 cases.(1975-03-01) Tibrewala, N S; Bhat, S; Pai, P M; Soneji, J SItem Buried rubber band: a cause for persistent penile discharge.(1995-08-01) Bhat, S; Mathew, J K; Thomas, AItem "Cariogenic potential of homemade weaning diet v/s commercial formula feeds" an in-vitro study.(2002-12-18) Bhat, S; Madan, IThe universal phenomenon of introducing weaning diet to the growing child sets its onset by the age of 4-6 months. This preliminary diet of the child governs his or her dental health in the long run. The main objective of this study is to investigate the histopathological and clinical invasion of deciduous teeth exposed to both the homemade weaning diet and commercial formula feeds. The study also aims at motivating the consumption of the most appropriate diet for the weaning baby. Extracted deciduous teeth were incubated with the test solutions of homemade diet and commercial formula feeds for the period of 6 weeks. Fewer carious invasion both clinically and histopathologically were seen in homemade feeds. Thus, homemade diet can be a strong candidate for the status of 'THE IDEAL WEANING FOOD'.Item Comparative evaluation of tensile bond strength of denture base resins to surface pretreated cobalt chromium base metal alloys--an in vitro study.(2001-07-26) Aazad, A M; Shetty, P; Bhat, S; Joseph, MThis study was undertaken to evaluate the tensile bond strength of acrylic resins to surface pretreated Cobalt-chromium base metal alloy. A total of 60 tensile bar specimens were prepared. One half of the bar was cast in cobalt-chromium alloy and the other half made of denture base resins attached to the alloy following surface pretreatment. Two denture base resins and five surface pre-treatments were used which included sandblasting, acid etching, use of metal adhesive primers and the combination of the above mentioned modes. Gradual axial loads were applied on the tensile bar specimen mounted on a Hounsfield tensometer till bond failure was evident. Statistical evaluation was done using Mann-Whitney U test. The study results indicate that the bond strength in those specimens wherein a combination of sandblasting, acid etching and priming was done as surface pretreatment, showed the maximum values as compared to the other groups.Item Diabetic nephropathy in fibrocalcific pancreatic diabetes.(1995-11-01) Mathew, T P; Visweswaran, K R; Jayakumar, R V; Bhat, SItem An easy method to remove self-retained Foley catheter.(1994-10-01) Thomas, A; Bhat, S; Mathew, J KItem Echinococcal disease of the kidney--a case report.(1996-02-01) Thomas, A; Bhat, S; Jacob, A JItem Effect of re-using nickel-chromium alloy on its ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and modulus of elasticity.(1998-01-26) Issac, L; Bhat, SIn order to bring down the cost of the castings used in fixed partial denture prosthesis, a study was conducted by reusing the nickel chromium alloy without adding any new material. We studied the effect on the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and modulus of elasticity after reusing the nickel-chromium alloys. Results showed degenerative changes in the properties evaluated after recasting. These changes were statistically significant, suggesting that it can not be reused.Item An evaluation of closest speaking space using various sibilants amongst age groups of both sexes.(1995-07-01) Bhat, S; Bhargava, KClosest speaking space plays a crucial role in the success of complete denture prosthesis. For proper phonetics, esthetic and comfort there should be minimum amount of separation between the incisal edges of upper and lower anterior teeth during speech. The present study shows that there is no significant variation in closest speaking space amongst different age groups of both sexes and between sibilants. However, there is a significant difference in closest speaking space amongst individuals.Item Evaluation of the polished surface characteristic of cobalt-chrome castings subsequent to various finishing and polishing techniques.(2001-10-04) Ponnanna, A A; Joshi, S M; Bhat, S; Shetty, PFinishing and Polishing constitutes an essential requisite after the fabrication of removable partial dentures. Improper finishing and polishing of cast framework will adversely affect the quality of functional units of partial dentures due to reduced dimensions. In this study the polished surface characteristic and loss of weight of the casting were evaluated and compared following different finishing and polishing techniques. A total number of thirty test specimens were cast and each surface finishing and polishing technique was carried out with a high speed polishing motor and an electropolishing unit under standardised conditions. Surface roughness was evaluated by means of a surface roughness analyzing instrument, Perthometer. The loss of weight due to the metal lost was observed on a sensitive electronic balance. The results of polishing technique employed with G3 group revealed better surface characteristic. It may be understood that sandblasting causes initial roughness and the sequence of coarse cylindrical abrasive, Black hard rubber polisher (coarse grit-Dentauram), Grey hard rubber polisher (Med-grit-Dentauram), Green hard rubber polisher (Fine-grit-Dentauram), Grey flexible rubber polisher (Fine grit-Renfert), felt buff with pumice slurry and felt buff with green polishing compound (Degussa) produced improved surface in this case. The loss of weight due to metal lost show concern with technique groups G4, G5, G6. It can be avoided by judicious sandblasting and application of proper grit of abrasive agents.Item Hospitalisation due to infectious and parasitic diseases in District Civil Hospital, Belgaum, Karnataka.(2008-07-05) Naik, A C; Bhat, S; Kholkute, S DTo assess the burden of infectious and parasitic diseases on hospital services at District Civil Hospital (DCH) Belgaum, a retrospective study was carried out using discharge records concerning 8506 inpatients due to infectious and parasitic diseases among 95,655 patients admitted for all causes during the reference period 2000-2003. Out of the 21 causes of infectious and parasitic diseases, only 5 contributed maximally towards hospital admission. The most frequent cause was intestinal infections (44.0%) followed by tuberculosis (35.4%). 57.5% of these admissions were from the productive age group of 20-54 years. Tuberculosis is the most important disease in terms of hospital bed days (59.7%). Tuberculosis and intestinal infectious diseases represent more than three-fourth of the overall burden in terms of hospital bed days.Item In vitro evaluation of ceramometal bond strength in anterior metal ceramic crowns with and without palatal coverage of porcelain.(2001-04-23) Krishna, C M; Bhat, S; Shetty, PThis in vitro study compared the load necessary to cause porcelain bond failure on porcelain covering the labial and palatal surfaces compared with porcelain covering only labial surface in metal ceramic crowns of maxillary anterior teeth. 30 metal ceramic crowns for maxillary central incisor tooth were fabricated in two groups (Groups A and Group B) (15 samples in each group). In group A, palatal ceramo-metal junction was placed at cervical 1/5th of palatal surface. In Group B the palatal ceramo-metal junction was placed at palato incisal line angle and these crowns were subjected to load using Instron testing machine. Mean failure load for group A is statistically highly significant than Group B. (P value = 0.0025). But both these values are higher than the reported mean maximal incising forces.Item Knowledge, attitudes and practices of newly diagnosed sputum positive cases of pulmonary tuberculosis.(1999-12-11) Bhat, S; Singal, N; Aggarwal, C S; Jain, R CLack of awareness of risk posed to the community by a sputum positive case of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (PTB) is an impediment in the control of Tuberculosis. A study involving 212 newly diagnosed sputum positive patients aged 15 years or more, revealed that only 9% of the patients knew correctly the cause of PTB. Knowledge about mode of spread of the disease was not known to 49% of patients. Awareness regarding the investigations like chest X-ray and sputum examination was high as 70% but utility of sputum examination was known to only 29% of the patients. Awareness of harmful sequelae of inadequate and incomplete treatment was as high as 93% but knowledge per se of adequate duration of treatment was poor in a half (50%) of the subjects. Attitude towards domiciliary treatment was generally positive (88%) Practices regarding safe sputum disposal and preventive measures practised in the families were poor in nearly two third's of patients. Health education efforts need to be strengthened to create better awareness of these important aspects of tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment and control.Item A novel ready-to-use dry-reagent polymerase chain reaction for detection of Escherichia coli & Shigella species(Indian Council of Medical Research, 2019-05) Mishra, MN; Kulkarni, RD; Mohanraj, J; Nisshanthini, S D; Ajantha, G S; Chandrasekhar, A; Kenge, P; Bhat, SBackground & objectives: Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has wide acceptance for rapid identification of pathogens and also for diagnosis of infectious conditions. However, because of economic and expertise constraints, a majority of small or peripheral laboratories do not use PCR. The objective of the present study was to develop a dry-reagent PCR assay as an alternative to conventional PCR to assess its applicability in routine laboratory practice using malB gene for identification of Escherichia coli as a model. Methods: A total of 184 isolates were selected for the study comprising clinical isolates of E. coli and non-E. coli including Shigella sp. and a few other control strains. The DNA was isolated from all the isolates. The isolated DNA as well as the overnight grown bacterial cultures were subjected to both conventional wet PCR and dry-reagent PCR. Results: The genomic DNA isolated from E. coli showed amplification of malB gene in both conventional wet and dry-reagent PCR and the band was observed at 491 bp. In dry-reagent PCR, the overnight grown E. coli cells also showed positive result. The non-E. coli strains other than Shigella sp. showed negative in both conventional wet and dry-reagent PCR. Shigella sp. showed positive in both conventional wet and dry-reagent PCR. Interpretation & conclusions: Considering the elimination of genomic DNA isolation step, and similar results with the conventional wet PCR, dry-reagent PCR may be a good alternative for the conventional wet PCR.Item Primary squamous cell carcinoma of caecum.(2003-07-13) Bhat, S; Pai, M; Premnath, R PProximal to the anal canal, carcinomas composed in whole or in part of squamous epithelium are distinctly uncommon, accounting for 0.1 per cent of all colorectal carcinomas. Pure squamous cell carcinoma of the colorectum are extremely rare. Here we report a case of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the caecum in a 55 year old lady from South India.Item Sarcomatoid carcinoma in a bladder diverticulum--a rare case.(2005-12-31) Kishore, T A; Bhat, S; Albert, A S; Augustine, JItem Significance and evaluation of proteinuria.(1994-08-01) Bhat, S; Visweswaran, KItem Stress variations in recast Ni-Cr alloy--a finite element analysis.(2000-01-20) Isaac, L; Joseph, M; Bhat, S; Shetty, PA finite element analysis was carried out to analyse the stress variations in a mandibular posterior fixed partial denture (FPD), made of recast nickel-chromium alloy. A two dimensional finite element model was developed and then analysed with STAAD III/ISDS program with an occlusal load of 1 kg applied to the casting surface. The analysis revealed that the connectors experienced maximum stresses and the generated stress values decreased within the fixed partial denture made of recast Ni-Cr alloy. It seemed unlikely that FPD inspite of being made of recast alloy might fail before the other tissue components show signs of degeneration thus establishing the potential for recycling the Ni-Cr alloy in actual dental practice.
