Item Hollow viscus perforation with gas under diaphragm: a misnomer?(Medip Academy, 2023-07) Dutta, P.; Wadhawan, G.; Arora, R.; Sharma, S.Background: Hollow viscus perforation is suspected when radiographs show the presence of gas under diaphragm and is usually an indication for surgical abdominal exploration. This is significant because in cases of hollow viscous perforation, plain radiography may be used as the first line of diagnosis. Concerns regarding diagnosing those 30% cases of hollow viscus perforation which was not detected by the plain radiography. Methods: A bound prospective study of patients who were managed for perforated hollow abdominal viscus, when no abnormality was appreciated on radiographs, confirmation was done either on the basis of clinical examination, further investigations or by exploratory laparotomy performed on basis of selection of cases. Results: Based on the study, 15 patients were found with no gas under diaphragm on radiographs and perforation was confirmed on the grounds of clinical, physical examination, further investigations or by exploratory laparotomy on basis of cases. The results obtained in the present study shows male predominance, duodenal perforation being the most common perforation amongst hollow viscus perforations and age group of 20-40 years were affected mainly. Conclusions: It is important to note that not all the cases of pneumoperitoneum indicate perforated abdominal viscus or vice versa. This study highlights the difficulty in pre-operative diagnosing pneumoperitoneum with upright chest and abdominal X-rays provided its sensitivity varied from 50-98%.Item Introduction Of Formative Assessment: An Essential Component Of Cbme(IMED Research Publications, 2019-07) Sharma, M; Bajaj, JK; Kaur, K; Arora, R.Background: The Medical Council of India has visualized the effective outcome based strategy of CompetencyBased Medical Education where the assessment is the essential component of competencies. Formative assessmentis a systematic approach designed for students during a particular period of study to provide motivation forlearning. It helps the student to set the desired but attainable goals and to follow the steps required to achievethose specified goals.Aim: To introduce the feedback to the students during substages and after the theory tests and to assess studentsand teacher’s perspective towards feedback.Material and Method: The project was done in the Department of Anatomy, Punjab Institute of Medical Sciences,Jalandhar involving 1st year batch students and faculty members of Anatomy. Results: A good percentage of students were satisfied with the formative assessment and wanted the process tobe continued in the subsequent years too. All the faculty members had positive response for formative assessment. Conclusion: Formative assessment is the strategy to encourage the students for self directed learning and selfassessment.Item Thanatophoric skeletal dysplasia: a rare case report(Medip Academy, 2024-08) Arora, R.; Holla, V. N. K.A diverse range of bone growth disorders known as skeletal dysplasias are brought on by new mutations in the FGFR3 gene, which cause abnormalities in the size and shape of the skeleton. We present a case of thanatophoric dysplasia diagnosed antenatally on ultrasound. G2P1L0, a 30-year-old woman, came to our radiodiagnosis department for her first pregnant ultrasound examination. The results showed a single live intrauterine baby with a head that was considerably bigger than the rest of the body, a hypoplastic nasal bone, an exceedingly thin fetal thorax, thicker soft tissue in the hands and feet, as well as bent long bones that resemble telephone receiver handles, along with bilateral club feet and trident hands.
