A Comparative Study of Serum Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase, Serum Alkaline Phosphatase and GGT/ALP Ratio in Different Liver Disorders. International Journal of Contemporary Medical Research . 2019 Sep; 6(9): i1-i42393-915X2454-7379http://imsear.searo.who.int/handle/123456789/202580Introduction: Determination of serum enzyme activity playsimportant role in the diagnosis of various liver diseases.Out of the commonly used enzymes, serum γ-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGT) and serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP)are considered as the markers of cholestasis but due to widedistribution their single estimation lacks specificity. As bothGGT and ALP are increased in liver disease, GGT/ALP ratiocould help differentiate liver disorders. Aims and objectives:To study the serum levels of GGT, ALP and GGT/ALP ratio isvarious liver disordersMaterial and methods: A case-control study was carried outon 28 patients each suffering from acute alcoholic hepatitis(AAH), acute viral hepatitis (AVH), obstructive jaundice(OJ) and chronic liver disease (CLD). Serum GGT and ALPlevels were determined in these patients and compared withhealthy controls (n=28). GGT/ALP ratio was calculated andcompared. Statistical significance was determined usingMicrosoft Excel (Microsoft Corp, Washington, USA). P value<0.05 was considered significant.Result: Significant increase (p<0.001) in GGT and ALP levelswere seen in all types of liver disease. Maximum elevation ofGGT and ALP was observed in cholestatic etiology. AlthoughGGT was higher in patient with OJ, this was statistically notsignificant when compared with patient with AAH. GGT/ALP ratio in healthy controls was 0.22±0.12. This ratio wassignificantly elevated (p<0.001) in all the liver disorder withhighest being in AAH (1.43±0.36).Conclusion: Although both serum GGT and ALP are alteredin liver diseases, GGT/ALP can be useful in differentiating theliver diseases of different etiologies.AlcoholViralCholestasisHepatitisA Comparative Study of Serum Gamma-Glutamyl Transpeptidase, Serum Alkaline Phosphatase and GGT/ALP Ratio in Different Liver DisordersJournal ArticleIndiaAssistant Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Rajshree Medical Research Institute, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, Pin – 243501Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Rohilkhand Medical College and Hospital, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, Pin – 243006, India
