Aspergillus spp., a versatile cell factory for enzymes and metabolites: Interventions through genome editing. Indian Journal of Experimental Biology. 2022 Sep; 60(9): 647-6580975-10090019-5189http://imsear.searo.who.int/handle/123456789/222527Aspergillus sp. is widely distributed in nature and plays significant roles in the degradation of lignocellulose biomass and extensively used in bioprocess and fermentation technology and many species are also a generally regarded safe. Many of the Aspergillus species are established cell factories due to their inherent capacity in secreting large number of hydrolytic enzymes. With the advent of next generation genomic technologies and metabolic engineering technologies, the production potential of Aspergillus cell factory has improved over the years. Various genome editing tools has been developed for Aspergillus like engineered nucleases, zinc finger nucleases, TALEN and CRISPR-Cas9 system. Currently, the CRISPR/Cas9-based technique is extensively used to enhance the effectiveness of gene manipulation in model system Aspergillus nidulans and other strains like Aspergillus oryzae, Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus fumigatus. This review describes the recent developments of genome editing technologies in Aspergillus the synthesis of heterologous proteins and secondary metabolites in the Aspergillus species.CRISPRGenome editingAspergillus spp., a versatile cell factory for enzymes and metabolites: Interventions through genome editingJournal ArticleIndiaRajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Jagathy, Thiruvananthapuram-695 014, Kerala, IndiaSchool of Biotechnology, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri, Kerala, IndiaDepartment of Life Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bengaluru-560 029, Karnataka, IndiaDepartment of Food Technology, T K M Institute of Technology, Kollam-691 505, Kerala, IndiaMicrobial Processes and Technology Division, CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Trivandrum-695 019, Kerala, IndiaCollege of Natural Resources and Environment, Northwest A & F University, Yangling, Shaanxi-712 100, ChinaCenter for Innovation and Translational Research, CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, Lucknow-226 001, IndiaSustainability cluster, School of engineering, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Dehradun-248 007, Uttarakhand, IndiaCentre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability, Lucknow-226 029, Uttar Pradesh, India
