Siriraj Medical Journal, 1993 Jun; 45(6): 359-374.http://imsear.searo.who.int/handle/123456789/137991The authors (Train the Brain Forum Committee) develop “Thai Mental State Examination (TMSE)” as the first neuropsychiatric test for the standard mental status examination for Thai subjects. The total score of TMSE is 30 points and it contains six basic subtests concerning orientations (6 points), registration (3 points), attention (5 points), calculation (3 points), language (10 points), and recall (3 points). After developing TMSE, this test had been applied to 180 normal healthy Thai elderly, aged between 60-70 years throughout the country. The mean total score of TMSE for normal Thai elderly is 27.38 (standard deviation 2.02) points. The cut-off point for the diagnosis of normal healthy Thai elderly for TMSE is over 23 points, calculated by the mean total score minus 2 by standard deviation of mean. There were 16.37 percent of Thai elderly who scored the full score of 30 marks in the TMSE test. The main subtest that most Thai elderly lost their score were recall (67.43%), calculation (41.14%), language (25.14%) and orientation (24.00%). The score lost for attention and registration were minimal, recorded as 4.57% and 2.86% respectively. Thai mental state examination is now applied throughout Thailand as it is a quick (less than 10 minutes), sensitive, reliable, and applicable neuropsychiatric test for Thai subject who has differed in socioeconomic status as well as differed in the level of education and traditional status which dissimilar to the Westerner.enThai mental state examinationThai Mental State Examination (TMSE).Article
