Item Acitretin induced reversible hyperglycemia.(2004-05-24) Singh, P K; Kumar, PawanItem Assessment of right ventricular diastolic function: does it predict post-operative course in tetralogy of Fallot.(2004-05-09) Rathore, Kaushlendra Singh; Gupta, Nirmal; Kapoor, Aditya; Modi, Nitin; Singh, P K; Tewari, Prabhat; Sinha, NakulBACKGROUND: In some cases of tetralogy of Fallot the post-operative course is characterized by episodes of low cardiac output, elevated central filling pressures and prolonged ventilation and inotropic support. This may be due to impaired diastolic function of the right ventricle despite preservation of biventricular systolic function. METHODS AND RESULTS: Sixty-four consecutive patients (mean age 7.06+/-4.9 years) undergoing repair of tetralogy of Fallot were prospectively studied to assess right ventricular diastolic function. 'Restrictive physiology' was defined as presence of laminar antegrade diastolic pulmonary artery flow (A wave) throughout the respiratory cycle, which was coincident with atrial systole. Right ventricle restriction was present in 45/64 (70%, Group 1) patients and absent in 19/64 (30%, Group 2) patients. There was a marked inspiratory augmentation of the pulmonary artery A wave velocity, flow integral and duration. Transtricuspid flow revealed significantly lower peak E velocity, lower E/A ratio, shorter E deceleration time and higher A velocity time integral in those with right ventricular restriction. Biventricular systolic function and transmitral flow were normal in all patients. Those with restrictive physiology had significantly longer mean inotrope support duration, longer ventilation and chest drainage times. Correspondingly, the mean intensive care unit stay (56.7+/-9.3 v. 34.7+/-5.38 hours, p<0.01) and mean hospital discharge time (9.3+/-2.3 v. 6.2+/-0.5 days, p <0.001) was also significantly longer in group 1. CONCLUSIONS: Right ventricular restriction (as seen by laminar antegrade diastolic pulmonary artery flow throughout the respiratory cycle) exists in a significant subset of patients with tetralogy of Fallot following operative repair. Following surgery, such patients have higher inotropic requirement, longer ventilation times and longer hospital stay.Item Cadmium toxicity induced changes in plant water relations and oxidative metabolism of Brassica juncea L. plants.(2003-01-17) Singh, P K; Tewari, R KExcess of cadmium (Cd) induced changes in oxidative scenario and water status of plants viz.., total water content, specific water content, water saturation deficit (WSD) and transpiration of Brassica juncea plants grown in soil pot culture. Although lower and marginal levels of excess cadmium (100 and 250 ppm) improved growth but higher levels (500 ppm) caused significant suppression. Significant accumulation of proline, an indicator of water stress, occurred at higher level of Cd. Gradual increases in activities of certain antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and peroxidase along with increased lipid peroxidation are suggestive of disturbed oxidative metabolism. Taking together, the deleterious effects of Cd and its effects on oxidative metabolism clearly indicate enhanced generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to be instrumental in producing toxic effects of Cd. The excess levels of Cd also decreased the concentrations of soluble protein and chlorophylls and increased the ratio of chlorophyll a/b.Item Carcinoma penis.(1991-05-01) Singhal, V K; Razdan, J L; Gupta, S N; Khare, I C; Singh, P K; Singh, SIn the present study 90 cases of carcinoma penis were studied. The disease is more common after the age of 40 years; phimosis was found to be most important predisposing factor. Most common presentation was proliferative lesion with commonest involvement of glans penis. All the cases were of squamous cell carcinoma except one case of malignant melanoma. Clinical determination of lymph node metastasis is falacious as there was discrepancy between clinical and histopathological stage of the disease in 26.67% of cases. Therefore lymph node biopsy at the time of primary surgery is advocated. The result of total amputation is better than other mode of treatment.Item Complete heart block after epidural anaesthesia in a patient on beta-blocker.(1994-02-01) Tripathi, M; Singh, P KItem Effect of copper on growth, yield and concentration of Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.).(2009-07) Kumar, Ratan; Mehrotra, N K; Nautiyal, B D; Kumar, Praveen; Singh, P KA pot experiment was conducted at six graded levels of copper (Cu) viz., 0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5 mg kg-1 to test the response of wheat plants grown in a copper-responsive alluvial soil (entisol) under glass house conditions. The growth attributes like plant height, fresh and dry matter yield, percent dry matter enhanced with increasing Cu levels and was maximum at 1.5 mg kg-1 Cu while the number of tillers was minimum at this level. The grain yield at 1.5 mg kg-1 Cu was enhanced by 62.9% from the control. The increase in weight of 1000 grains ranged from 33.93 to 41.35 g in comparison to control (32.58 g). Harvest index (%) also increased and ranged from 39.42 to 47.73 in different treatments in comparison to control (35.92). Both 1000 grain weight and harvest index were maximum in the plants at 1.5 mg kg-1 copper. Cu concentrations in leaves, grain and straw enhanced with increasing levels of Cu application. The Fe concentration in leaves was significantly reduced by Cu application and the reduction was 10.3% at 2.5 mg kg-1 Cu and was not influenced in by Cu application in grain and straw. The Mn concentration was not affected by Cu application in any of the plant part studied. However, Zn concentration decreased significantly at higher levels of Cu (2.0 and 2.5 mg kg-1) in leaves and remained unaffected in the grain and straw.Item Effect of light intensity on in vitro multiple shoot induction and regeneration of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. cv Khandawa-2).(2000-04-24) Gupta, S K; Singh, P K; Sawant, S V; Chaturvedi, R; Tuli, RCotyledonary nodes taken alongwith shoot apex from seedlings of cotton (G. hirsutum) proliferated into shoots on nutrient agar medium supplemented with cytokinins. In the presence of optimal plant growth regulators, low light intensity enhanced the number of shoots initiated per explant in cotton. An average of 33.5 +/- 2.9 shoots were obtained from a single explant cultured for 8 weeks which is about four fold higher than the values reported in earlier protocols. The isolated shoots were rooted on nutrient agar medium supplemented with alpha-naphthalene acetic acid and transferred to soil after acclimatization. Regenerated plants were morphologically identical to the seed-germinated plants and were fertile.Item Effect of sulphur and phosphorus on yield, quality and nutrient status of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan).(2010-11) Deshbhratar, P B; Singh, P K; Jambhulkar, A P; Ramteke, D SA field experiment was conducted to study the impact of Sulphur (S) and Phosphorus (P) on yield, nutrient status of soil and their contents in pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) during the year 2008-2009. Seven treatments were studied in Factorial Randomized Block Design with three replications. The treatment combinations were derived from three levels of sulphur (0, 20 and 40 kg S ha-1) and four levels of phosphorus (0, 25, 50 and 75kg ha-1). The experimental soil was medium black, slightly calcareous, clay in texture and slightly alkaline in reaction. The results indicated a significant increase in grain yield (14.81 q ha-1) and straw yield (41.26 q ha-1) of pigeonpea after 20 kg S ha-1 and 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 treatment with common dose of nitrogen @ 30 kg ha-1. The increase in grain and straw yield was 102.77 and 52.87% as compare to higher over control. Maximum number of pods plant -1, maximum number of grains pod-1 and test weight by this treatment was also observed as compared to control. Application of S and P improved soil fertility status and S alone did not influence P availability. Hence, in order to maintain the fertility status of the soil at high level, combine application of 20 kg S ha-1 with 50 kg P2O5 ha-1 is essential. The residual fertility status of soil is advocated for rainfed pigeonpea crop grown on vertisol in Vidarbha region.Item Effectiveness of oral rehydration salt solution (ORS) in reduction of death during cholera epidemic.(1990-01-01) Sircar, B K; Saha, M R; Deb, B C; Singh, P K; Pal, S CAn extensive outbreak of acute gastroenteritis involving all age group of patients occurred during July-September, 1978 in the Central district of Manipur state. A total of 4469 cases occurred during the period. 45.7% of diarrhoea cases sampled and 47.6% of water samples collected from rivers were found to be positive for V.cholerae biotype EITor. Case fatality rate in this epidemic was exceptionally low (0.8%) which was attributed to the early domiciliary use of oral rehydration salt solution (ORS) in the affected villages. Utility of ORS in drastic reduction of case fatality rate during any epidemic situation was first of its kind in the Indian scene.Item Evaluation of four methods of DNA recovery from Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis present in intestine tissue of goats and comparative sensitivity of IS900 PCR with respect to culture for diagnosis of Johne's disease.(2008-08-26) Singh, P K; Singh, S V; Singh, A V; Sohal, J SLow sensitivity of PCR reaction for detection of Mycoobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) in tissues and fecal samples is mainly attributed to false negative results. Present study was undertaken to compare four methods of DNA isolation from tissues of infected animals and to determine most sensitive protocol for the recovery of DNA, suitable for IS900 PCR based detection of Johne's disease infection. Method I, the traditional van Soolingen2 method of DNA isolation was adopted for the isolation of DNA from tissues. Method II was modification (hexadecyl pyridinium chloride-HPC treatment) of van Soolingen2 method. Method III was traditional tissue DNA isolation method based on tissue lysis buffer. Method IV was modification of method III (HPC treatment). Using four methods of DNA isolation from 25 intestinal tissues of clinically infected goats, DNA was isolated from 15 (60.0%), 18 (72.0%), 13 (52.0%) and 13 (52.0%) tissues using method I, II, III and IV, respectively. All isolated DNA preparations were positive for MAP in IS900 PCR. HPC treatment enhanced the recovery of DNA from tissues of infected animals using method II. Therefore, method II can improve the diagnosis MAP infection using IS900 PCR.Item Exchangeable sodium induced changes in yield, water relation and cation composition of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare Mill).(2005-06-13) Garg, V K; Singh, P K; Pushpangadan, PA pot experiment was conducted with the objectives to assess the adaptation potential of fennel crop grown at 10, 20, 25, 35 and 40 ESP (exchangeable sodium percentage) levels. Results showed that the rate of seed germination, plant growth including branching pattern, umbels per plant and 1000 test seed weight were adversely affected by sodic soils. Assuming that fifty percent reduction in seed yield and Na+/K+ ratio in leaf tissue as an index of alkali tolerance revealed that fennel was tolerant up to 25 ESP. The cell sap pH and EC reflected optimum osmoticum maintenance to withstand sodicity stress at this level and beyond this leaf water potential decreased (negatively) more to impede water uptake.Item Fungicidal elements accumulated in Cryptothecia punctulata (Ascomycetes lichen) of an arecanut orchard in South India.(2005-04-16) Nayaka, S; Singh, P K; Upreti, D KDifferent nutrient elements were analyzed in the lichen Cryptothecia punctulata collected from the arecanut trees which were exposed to several sprays of a fungicide Bordeaux mixture. Its diagnosis is made by exclusion of all causes of renal failure and by all the five major criteria as set by the International Ascites Club. The presence of hepatomegaly, poor nutritional status, and oesophageal varices at endoscopy are associated with a high risk of HRS. The liver tests, the Child-Pugh score, are of no value in prediction of its occurrence. Contraction of the effective blood volume, which may lead to renal hypoperfusion with preferential renal cortical ischaemia, is proposed pathogenesis of the condition. Because understanding of the pathogenesis of HRS is incomplete, therapy is supportive only. Optimal fluid management is vital as there is almost invariably a reduction in effective arterial blood volume. Dopamine, frusemide and haemofiltration may be helpful in management of fluid overload but do not affect renal function. TIPS has been used successfully in small series of patients. The vasopressin analog also has been used with early excellent response. The treatment of HRS has been discouraging and the only proven cure for HRS is liver transplantation at this point of time.Item Immunological studies in leprosy--II: Study of lymphoblast transformation to PHA in different types of leprosy patients.(1984-01-01) Singh, P K; Ratna,; Jain, P K; Mital, V PNinety cases of different types of leprosy were studied for lymphoblast transformation response using PHA-M. The difference of percentage was statistically analysed and found to be highly significant when total leprosy cases were compared with control cases and with different types of leprosy cases (P = less than .005), except control and TT where it was significant only (P = less than .05). The difference between TT and other types was also calculated and has been observed to be highly significant (P = less than .005). There was gradual decrease in lymphoblast transformation percentage from tuberculoid pole to lepromatous pole.Item Immunological studies in leprosy. III-Cutaneous response to antigens in spectrum of leprosy.(1984-04-01) Singh, P K; Ratna,; Jain, P K; Mital, V PDelayed type of hypersensitivity response was assessed in 65 cases of leprosy of different types, and 18 control using lepromin (Dharmendra) and candida antigens. 0.1 ml of antigen was injected intra-dermally and results were recorded after 48 hours. The induration of 5 mm or more was taken as positive for early (Fernandez) reaction in lepromin test, and also for candida reaction. Both types of tests were positive in decreasing order from tuberculoid to borderline type while negative in borderline lepromatous and lepromatous type.Item Impact of phosphorous on biochemical changes in Hordeum vulgare L. in mixed cropping with Chickpea.(2010-09) Shukla, O P; Singh, P K; Deshbhratar, P BMultiple cropping (i.e. intercropping or mixed cropping) plays an important role in agriculture because of the effective utilization of resources, significantly enhancing crop productivity compared with that of monocultured crops. The study was planed to assess the effect of various concentrations (00, 30, 60, 90 kg ha-1) of phosphorous on the biochemical composition of grains of Hordeum vulgare L. (NDB-1050) in mixed cropping system with Chickpea. Phosphorous is an essential ingredient for plants to convert atmospheric N (N2) into an ammonium (NH4) as a useable form. The available nitrogen content was found more in the year 2006 (131 kg ha-1) than year 2005 (105 kg ha-1). The results of available nitrogen content were showed that the mixed cropping system enhances N fixation process because phosphorous also influences nodule development through its basic functions in plants as an energy source. Reducing, non reducing and total sugar content of H. vulgare L. were influenced by changes in the phosphorous doses. Maximum protein (13.43 %) was obtained at 60 kg P2 O5 ha-1 during the year 2006. Lysine, tryptophan and methionine content were found maximum in year 2006, respectively. Total mineral content of grains of plant (0.99 g 100g-1) was found maximum by the application of 60 kg P2 O5 ha-1. It is possible that there was an increase in the soil N made available by the leguminous chickpea species, and this could be another reason why there was an increase in Hordeum vulgare L. shoot mass per plant with intercropping with chickpea.Item Is Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis, the cause of Johne’s disease in animals, a good candidate for Crohn’s disease in man.(2010-03) Singh, A V; Singh, S V; Singh, P K; Sohal, J SMycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) causes Johne’s disease or paratuberculosis, a gastro intestinal inflammatory condition in ruminants and other animals, which is similar to Crohn’s disease (CD) that occurs in man. The role of MAP in the causation of CD has been under intense investigation in the last few decades.
