Item A 12-year-old boy with fever and blue ears.(1997-04-01) Passi, G R; Singsit, J; Singh, MItem Abortion legalized: challenges ahead.(2007-01-08) Singh, M; Jha, ROBJECTIVE: To see whether advocacy for abortion law and comprehensive abortion care (CAC) sites after legalization of abortion in Nepal is adequate among educated people (above school leaving certificate). METHOD: 150 participants were assigned randomly who agreed to be in the survey and were given structured questionnaires to find out their perception of abortion and CAC sites. RESULT: Majority know abortion is legalized and majority have positive attitude about legalization of abortion, however majority are not aware of abortion service in CAC sites and none knew the cost of abortion service. CONCLUSION: Proper and adequate advocacy of the new abortion law and CAC service is essential.Item Absence of Helicobacter pylori in oral mucosal lesions.(1998-06-03) Singh, K; Kumar, S; Jaiswal, M S; Chandra, M; Singh, MA prospective study was conducted in 26 patients with benign oral ulcers and oral carcinoma and 26 age and sex matched controls to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in oral mucosal biopsies. Oral mucosal biopsies were subjected to rapid urease test, campylobacter like organism (CLO) test, histopathological examination and bacteriological culture for demonstration of H pylori. Urease test was positive for H pylori in 3 (11.4%) out of 26 cases and CLO test in 2 (14%) out of 14 cases. On histology, H pylori was identified in 4 (15.38%) out of 26 cases. The spiral organism was universally absent in culture of both patients and controls. These pilot data negate the casual association of H pylori in oral mucosal lesions.Item Accidental injuries among technical personnel in railways at Allahabad.(1981-10-01) Ghosh, D B; Singh, G; Banerji, S C; Singh, MItem Accidental pilocarpine poisoning with recovery. (A case report).(1969-10-01) Chamnong, V; Periyasamy, S M; Singh, M; Guleria, J S; Bhide, N KItem Adenosine deaminase activity in pleural fluid--a diagnostic test of tuberculous pleural effusion.(1992-07-01) Prasad, R; Tripathi, R P; Mukerji, P K; Singh, M; Srivastava, V MAdenosine deaminase (ADA) activity in pleural fluids was studied in 47 patients with pleural effusion of different etiology. Patients were divided into two groups: Group I - Tuberculous pleural effusion (21 patients): Group II - Non tuberculous effusion (26 patients) and these included malignant pleural effusion (9 cases), synpneumonic pleural effusion (9 cases) and transudative pleural effusion (8 cases). The mean ADA activity was 64.67 IU/L +/- 21.68 in group I and 6.99 +/- 3.69 in Group II. Increased mean pleural fluid ADA activity in tuberculous pleural effusion was highly significant (p < 0.001) when compared with pleural effusion of non-tuberculous etiology. Based on lowest value of ADA activity found in tuberculous pleural effusion (30 IU/L), the test has a sensitivity and specificity of 1.Item Adherence to anti-tuberculosis treatment.(1999-12-04) Singh, MItem Adreno-genital syndrome.(1969-09-01) Verma, I C; Singh, M; Ghai, O PItem Adult respiratory distress syndrome in a neonate.(1989-06-01) Singh, M; Gulati, S; Narang, A; Bhakoo, O NItem Adult thoracic ganglioneuroblastoma with massive pleural effusion.(1993-05-01) Aggarwal, P; Wali, J P; Singh, MItem Aerosol treatment of asthma.(1988-04-01) Singh, M; Kumar, LItem Aetiopathogenesis and management of diabetic neuropathy.(2002-05-21) Afzaal, S; Singh, M; Saleem, IItem Age specific incidence rate and pathological spectrum of oral cancer in Allahabad.(2003-09-30) Mehrotra, R; Singh, M; Kumar, D; Pandey, A N; Gupta, R K; Sinha, U SBACKGROUND: Cancer of the oral cavity is one of the commonest cancers in India. Use of smokeless tobacco (Pan masala, Zarda etc ) is on the increase in North India and specially in Uttar Pradesh. AIMS: To assess the patients characteristics and histopathological subtypes of the oral cancer in our region. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A single institutional retrospective study of 11 years from 1990 to 2000 was designed. Data was collected year wise using the tumour registry data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 40,559 biopsies were examined in the department during 1990-2000, out of which the oral cavity constituted 759 biopsies. The data was analysed with emphasis on age, sex, risk factors, site and histology. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The data was analysed utilizing the Kolomogroo-Smirnov two sample test. RESULTS: A comparison of the age specific incidence rates of oral cancer during 1990-2000 in Allahabad showed that the incidence was maximum in the 50-59 years age group and squamous cell carcinoma grade I was the most prevalent type. Of the total of 759 biopsies from oral cavity, 303 malignant cases. 232 (76.57%) were males and 71 (23.43% were females with a male to female ratio of 3.27:1. The tongue was the most frequently involved site--found in 42.57% cases. On an average, 63 new cases of oral cavity per annum were detected during this period. CONCLUSIONS: Properly structured site specific data like this can augment National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP) and is an essential indicator for the magnitude and the pattern of the cancer problem in India Urgent public health measures like public education and oral cancer awareness are required to curb this avoidable epidemic.Item Aggregation and deformability of erythrocytes in leprosy.(1995-06-01) Kumaravel, M; Singh, MThe hemorheological parameters, erythrocyte aggregation and deformability are determined in leprotic patients and are compared with that of healthy subjects. The aggregation is determined by sequential analysis of the He-Ne laser transmission data through erythrocyte suspension at hematocrit 5%. The erythrocyte deformability is determined by measurement of passage time (reciprocal of deformability) of erythrocyte suspension in PBS at hematocrit 6% through cellulose membrane. The observations show that in leprosy the aggregation of erythrocyte is marginally reduced and the deformability is significantly increased. These parameters in combination with low hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in these patients lowers the blood viscosity to maintain the transport of material across the capillary wall.Item Allergic and systemic reactions following yellow jacket stings.(2000-09-19) Subramanian, C; Jain, V; Singh, M; Kumar, LItem Alterations in testicular functions in patients of scrotal hydrocele.(1989-04-01) Singh, M P; Goel, T C; Singh, M; Chawdhary, S RForty three randomly selected patients of scrotal hydrocele were investigated for alterations in functions of the testes. FSH and LH levels were raised in 50 and 75 per cent of patients respectively whereas testosterone level was found subnormal in 14 of the 28 patients in whom hormone profile was studied. LH and FSH levels also showed some relation with duration and size of the hydrocele. Similarly, sperm concentration and their motility was found affected by the duration of the disease.Item Amoebic pleural effusion--diagnosed by microscopy.(1984-04-01) Gaur, S N; Jain, S K; Singh, MItem Amoeloblastic fibroma in an adult.(1978-03-16) Singh, M; Agarwal, S LItem ANA negative lupus erythematosus.(2000-05-23) Locham, K K; Singh, J; Garg, R; Singh, M; Jain, CItem Anaerobic septicaemia by Fusobacterium necrophorum: Lemierre's syndrome.(1998-05-20) Dhawan, B; Chaudhry, R; Pandey, A; Nisar, N; Singh, MLemierre's syndrome is characterized by acute pharyngotonsillitis with secondary thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein which is complicated by multiple metastatic foci of infections. This syndrome is caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum in healthy young persons and is extremely rare in occurrence. A pre-school child with Lemierre's syndrome is reported. The diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are emphasized in order to sensitize physicians to this uncommon condition.
