Item Acquired pure red cell aplasia--a case report.(1998-12-30) Rahman, J; Rashid, M A; Yunus, A B; Chowdhury, S A; Kabir, A; Khan, M A; Wajed, JA married female patient of 36 years with chronic anaemia, because of pure erythroid aplasia with a haemolytic component and hypothyroidism due to antithyroid auto-antibodies, was subsequently discovered as a case of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). She was treated with corticosteroid and immunosuppressive therapy and her anaemia was corrected. The response of erythroid aplasia to corticosteroid and other immunosuppressive agents suggests that immunological factors play a role in erythroid aplasia in SLE. The occurrence of red cell aplasia in association with a variety of immune phenomenon supports the concept that in SLE, erythroid aplasia may be of immune aetiology.Item Acute sulphone poisoning.(1981-03-01) Khan, M A; Singh, S D; Agarwal, A KItem Acute toxicity of copper sulphate to fresh water prawns.(2006-07-04) Lodhi, H S; Khan, M A; Verma, R S; Sharma, U DFresh water prawns, Macrobrachium lamarrei and Macrobrachium dayanum (Crustacea-Decapoda) were subjected to static bioassay tests to ascertain the LC50 values of copper sulphate. The 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr LC50 values of copper sulphate for M. lamarrei were 0.38, 0.361, 0.343 and 0.300 mg/l and for M. dayanum were 1.634, 0.988, 0.532 and 0.418 mg/l respectively. Behavioral responses and LC50 values indicate that M. lamarrei were more sensitive to copper sulphate than M. dayanum.Item Antimicrobial resistance trends in blood culture positive Salmonella Paratyphi A isolates from Pondicherry, India.(2016-04) Menezes, G A; Harish, B N; Khan, M A; Goessens, W; Hays, J PEnteric fever is a public health problem with the upsurge in the occurrence of Salmonella isolates that are resistant to ciprofloxacin. In this study, a total of 284 blood culture isolates of S. Paratyphi A were investigated. Of these isolates, 281 (98.9%) were nalidixic acid resistant. A high rate (6.3%) of high-level resistance (≥4 µg/mL) was found to ciprofloxacin. The isolates with ciprofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ≥12 µg/mL had 4 mutations, 2 mutations within the quinolone resistance-determining region of gyrA and 2 mutations also in parC. According to the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute 2012 MIC breakpoints, 75.0% of isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin. Finally, 3 major pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns were observed among the S. Paratyphi A isolates. The spread of fluoroquinolone resistant S. Paratyphi A necessitates a change toward ‘evidence-based’ treatment for enteric fever. The research provides a perspective on the increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistant S. Paratyphi A isolates in this region of India.Item Camptomelic dysplasia with sex reversal.(2005-01-08) Banu, N A; Khatoon, S; Qadir, E; Rahman, M M; Khan, M A; Islam, M Z; Shameem, MCamptomelic dysplasia is a disorder of the newborn characterized by congenital bowing and angulation of long bones together with other skeletal and extraskeletal defects. The affected newborn had dysmorphic features with bowing of the legs and bilateral talipes equinovarus. Radiology showed marked anterior bowing of both tibia with disproportionately short fibula, anterolateral bowing of the femurs and wide pelvic outlet with small iliac wings. She had sex reversal with normal female genitalia and 46, XY karyotype. Camptomelic dysplasia is generally considered to be a lethal skeletal dysplasia and most patients die in the neonatal period due to severe respiratory distress. Survivors may have learning difficulties, developmental delay, conductive hearing loss, myopia and recurrent chest infections. Because of its high associated mortality, prenatal diagnosis of camptomelic dysplasia is mandatory. The birth of a child with skeletal dysplasia is an emotionally difficult experience for parents.Item Chronic subdural haematoma and neural dysregulation of pancreatic islets.(1995-06-01) Rais, N M; Turel, K E; Khan, M A; Majithia, H R; Shah, A BItem Cytohistomorphological grading of breast carcinoma with special reference to apoptotic rates and lymph node metastasis.(2007-07-22) Khan, Nazoora; Rana, Farah; Afroz, Nishat; Khan, M ATo analyze the significance of comparative evaluation of cytohistomorphological grading of infiltrating ductal carcinoma with specific reference to lymphnode metastasis status and apoptotic index. 50 patients who underwent FNAC and mastectomy for infiltrating ductal carcinoma were included in the study. Concordance between cytological and histological grades was calculated. Cytological smears were also evaluated for apoptotic rates and lymph node metastasis and then compared with the histological grades using regression analysis. Histological and cytological grades were comparable and statistically significant difference was found in the lymphnode metastasis rate and apoptotic index in the three cytological grades of the tumor. Moreover, by considering the apoptotic rates, the sensitivity of cytological grading significantly rose in relation to histological grade. With histological grade taken as the standard, cytology was found to be comparable but less sensitive for grading infiltrating ductal carcinoma. However, by considering lymphnode status and apoptotic rates as calculated on cytology, the sensitivity of cytological grading rose significantly in relation to histological grade. Therefore, apoptotic index incorporated with cytological grade may provide relevant information on the aggressiveness of invasive ductal carcinoma of breast and could be a useful parameter to take into consideration when selecting neo-adjuvant therapy.Item Delayed tension pneumocephalus: a rare complication of shunt surgery.(2004-09-09) Sankhla, Suresh; Khan, G M; Khan, M AItem Demonstration of histamine receptors on the surface of Entamoeba histolytica.(1989-01-01) Khan, M A; Sen, P CHistamine receptors on the surface of E. histolytica could be demonstrated by histochemical method using three isolates of the protozoa grown and maintained in modified Boeck and Drbohlav's medium. Prior treatment of E. histolytica with cimetidine a H2 blocker, blocked the histamine uptake. Similar treatment with mepyramine maleate, a H1 blocker, did not prevent histamine uptake by the protozoa. It is postulated that E. histolytica has H2 receptors on its surface.Item Development outcome of Down's syndrome in eastern Libya.(1992-09-01) Khan, M AThe psychometric evaluations in 60 cases of Down's syndrome non-institutionalized children in the age group 1-15 years drawn after random selection was compared with 60 children with mental handicap from a residential institution drawn by matching for age, sex and sociocultural conditions. Results of the study show significant difference between the two groups in respect to IQ's but not in respect to DQ's.Item Diffuse endocapillary proliferative glomerulonephritis with refractory hypertension and pulmonary oedema.(1984-04-01) Prakash, J; Tripathi, K; Singh, R G; Ahmad, J; Khan, M A; Srivastava, P KItem The dispersing effect of low molecular weight dextran on human erythrocytes. Initially when the three polyxenic isolates were examined for their Pathogenicity after growing them with graded concentrations of histamine viz. M-2 through M-6 (log dilutions of the molar concentration of histamine dihydrochloride) the caecal scores were significantly enhanced in cultures grown with M-2 and M-3 concentrations. Subsequently NIH-200 strain was examined similarly after growing it with 20 micrograms/ml of histamine dihydrochloride through three generations. The Neal's caecal score of NIH-200 increased significantly stepwise up to second subculture and became stabilised at third generation with histamine.Item "Estimation of copper in serum, erythrocyte and urine in protein calorie malnutrition".(1976-10-01) Jain, V K; Khan, M A; Inamdar, S; Mathur, P S; Dabke, A T
