The sample consisted of294 adolescent patients at Pediatric Out-Patient Department, Ramathibodi Hospital.Instruments used in this study were questionnaires developed by the researchers andwere tested for psychometric properties. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,t-test, chi-square test, analysis of variance, post hoc test with Least SignificantDifference, and Pearson’s coefficient of correlation. Results revealed that adolescentpatients with different personal factors (age range, the number of sibling, patient’seducation, and hospital payment method), and illness factors (experience ofhospitalization, the number of hospital visits at the outpatient department) hadsignificant differences in self-care. Adolescent patients with internal locus of controlhad lower self care than those with external locus of control. In addition, health beliefs(perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, and perceived benefits) were significantly, positively related to self-care of adolescent patients, but perceived barriers weresignificantly, negatively related to self-care of adolescent patients.
